The triad of towns Kondinin, Karlgarin, and Hyden (commonly referred to collectively in historical studies such as Audrey Webb's Kondinin-Karlgarin-Hyden: Community, Time and Place) occupies a notable place in Western Australia's Wheatbelt, representing a distinct confluence of community, historical time, and geographic place. The book explores the historical development, community life, and cultural identity of the Western Australian towns of Kondinin, Karlgarin, and Hyden from settlement to the late 20th century. Overview: Published in 1988, Audrey Webb's Kondinin-Kargarin-Hyden: Community, Time and Place is a detailed local history focusing on the Shire of Kondinin and its key towns. The work spans 416 pages and chronicles the social, economic, and cultural evolution of the region, offering insight into the lives of early settlers and subsequent generation. Themes and Content: Settlement and Development: The book documents the establishment of Kondinin, Karlgarin, and Hyden, highlighting the challenges faced during pioneering, transport and agricultural development, and the establishment of local institutions. Community Life: Webb emphasizes the social fabric of these communities, detailing the roles of schools, churches, clubs, and local events in fostering a sense of identity and cohesion. Economic and Agricultural History: Particular attention is given to the agricultural practices and economic growth of the region, showing how wheat, sheep farming, and other local industries shaped the towns' development. The shift from pioneering hardships to more modernized farming is a recurring theme. Cultural Identity and Memory: The book reflects on the heritage and shared memories of the communities, capturing oral histories, personal stories, and photographs to illustrate the lived experiences of local residents. Purpose and Significance: This book serves both as a commemorative local history and a scholarly resource, providing a comprehensive picture of community, time, and place in the Wheatbelt towns of Western Australia. It is valuable for researchers, local historians, and anyone interested in understanding how small rural communities develop over time, balancing growth, tradition, and social cohesion. .

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Book condition is fine. Great Looking book. Hard cover. Dust jack fine. Spine intact. Text body clean. Front and back book board clean. Professor Martyn Webb and his wife Audrey confess that when they commenced researching material for a book entitled original…ly " Onslow - "A town in two places" they had no conception of the breadth and diversity of the subject. In fact it took seven years to complete their research and as they say in their preface this book finally evolved as being about Australia which lived lived and breadth under the traditions of the British Empire. It defines not so much a period which ended with the fail of Singapore in 1942 but a precise set of culture economics, political and social conditions which , when take together stimulated quite ordinary people to thrust themselves boldly into the harsh and forgiving lands of Ashburton and the North west to become the new breed of Australian, the Nor-Western. The contributions of the Aborigines as a remarkable people is acknowledged , as fully as time would permit in dealing with a subject so complex. This book book is thus about an amaigam of a place, a period and a people. It is fascinating photographs and is book no historian can overlook.
