Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the history and evolution of the Christian Eastern patriarchates, from their foundation in the early centuries of Christianity to the 14th century AD. The author meticulously examines the establishment and prominence of these patriarchates within the larger context of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity. The book explores the patriarchates' ecclesiastical authority, their relationship with secular rulers, and the theological controversies that shaped their development. Through an in-depth study of historical documents, the author provides valuable insights into the complex interactions between the patriarchates and the political, social, and religious forces of the time. The analysis extends beyond the well-known patriarchates of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem, shedding light on lesser-known patriarchates such as Chalcedon, Cyprus, and Bulgaria, and their impact on the spread and development of Christianity. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. NA (illustrator). The 1609 first edition of Aubertus Miraeus' history of the Catholic orders of knighthood, including the Knights Templar, Hopsitaller, Teutonic, Order of the Golden Fleece, etc. The work details the origins, rules and histories. To some degree, this was a work of counter-reformation, aiming to show historical virtues of the Catholic church. As such, the institutions are presented in their relationship to church organization. The work also touches on Iberian initiatives, which were created to push back the Moorish forces from the Iberian Peninsula. Miraeus also touches on the later Order of the Golden Fleece, Order of the Garter and Saint Michael. Provenance - The title page and last page both bear the signature of J Franc. d'Orival. D'Orival was a very common French Catholic name in the 17th century, but in 1610 a Francois d'Orival did write a manuscript documenting the Holy Shroud of Besancon and its reputed miracles (see the Doubs Archives, "Le Sainct Suaire de Besancon. Antiquite, miracles et venerations d'icelu Le Sainct Suaire de Besancon."). There is no possible way to know if this is the same Francois d'Orival, but since the shroud of Besancon was thought to have been brought to France by a knight, there is some small possible relationship.
