Chi era dunque Gesù, e quale la sua funzione? Vi è chi la considera una sintesi armonica di dogmi immutabili, chi guarda ad essa come ad un coacervo di nozioni fantastiche, antiscientifiche e contraddittorie, chi ne parla come di una «maschera» che impedisce di cogliere la natura reale dell'insegnamento impartito da Gesù di Nazareth. Cos'è dunque la religione cristiana? Gesù profeta dell'IsIam è un saggio che si pone l'obiettivo di indagare la biografia di Gesù in base alle fonti cristiane ed islamiche. I criteri di una analisi accurata e meticolosa tendono a separare i fatti storici dalle fabulazioni mitologiche, a ricostruire le fattezze originali dell'insegnamento di Gesù dissolvendo le contaminazioni elleniche che ne hanno alterato le fattezze. La restaurazione dell'aspetto primordiale dell'insegnamento cristiano ha come necessaria controparte la dissoluzione della macchinosa «teologia della redenzione» congeniata da Paolo di Tarso. La presentazione della dottrina predicata dal Nazareno non può prescindere dalla confutazione del visionarismo paolino e l'Autore, Muhammad 'At? ur-Rahim, affronta il compito con piena consapevolezza delle sue implicazioni teologiche ed ecclesiologiche. Sino ad epoca recente i Cristiani europei hanno avuto scarsissime possibilità di attingere alle informazioni relative a Gesù contenute nelle fonti islamiche. E questa la ragione per cui il presente libro, pur risultando in parte datato rispetto ai più recenti risultati della critica biblica, mantiene intatto il suo fascino e costituisce una testimonianza preziosa che l'Occidente non può più passare sotto silenzio.
