Under the influence of such images, called ukiyo-e, the Impressionist painter Claude Monet even prortraited his wife as a Japanese dancing girl in La Japonaise (1876), now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Contemporary European and American connoisseurs were eager to form extensive collections of ukiyo-e, but their access was primarily limited to woodblock prints. The costly, individualized paintings of the type displayed in this exhibition were relatively rare outside Japan. In light of this, the MFA is particularly fortunate to have amassed one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of these important paintings. Largely acquired through the efforts of Boston physician William Sturgis Begelow (1850-1926) during his residence in Japan in the late nineteenth century, the Museum's holdings of ukiyo-e paintings number over seven hundred works. Included are exquisitive paintings by all off the major masters from the seventeenth through the mid-nineteenth centuries. 'Drama and Desire' represents the first exhibition to highlight this collection." excerpt from the Director's foreword, Malcom Rogers, Ann and Graham Gund Director, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. …

It is therefore a particular satisfaction to us that the British Museum is the venue of the most comprehensive exhibition in modern times of the artist's work, where our own holdings can be seen in the context of a large part of his surviving oeuvre. The British Museum did not, of course, make its collection of Utamaro's masterpieces in isolation, but as one of many active participants, both individual and institutional, in the great enthusiasm in the West for things Japanese in the second half of the 19th century and early this century. In this movement historically known as Japonism, the artists of the Ukiyo-e school were held in the highest esteem, and among them none came to be more revered than Utamaro. The admiration for his works let to the formation of large and splendid collections in the USA and Europe, many of which remain today in Boston, Chicago, New York, Paris, Brussels and London. All these, together with many lesser collections, have now agreed to join this ambitious project by lending their finest examples. In addition, this exhibition includes many of the finest of Utamaro's works from Japanese collections. Some of these were lovingly preserved by those who valued Ukiyo-e during the period of its decline in prestige within Japan in the later 19th century. Other examples have returned to their country of origin only recently, as esteem for the arts of the Edo period, and especially artists such as Utamaro, has risen to its highest level since his lifetime. This exhibition is therefore an example of international co-operation to honour a great artistic figure." excerpt from the introductory message by Robert Anderson, Director of the British Museum, London, 1995. Kitagawa Utamaro (illustrator).…
