Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a comprehensive exploration of tuberculosis, tracing its origins to ancient Egypt and following its historical progression through insightful observations and scientific breakthroughs. It delves into the work of Hippocrates and his theory of phlegm's role in consumption, underscoring the significance of the author's clinical observations despite speculative explanations common in ancient medicine. The author highlights the impact of Galen, Paracelsus, and the Arabian school of medicine, emphasizing their contributions to the field while acknowledging the limitations of their dogma-influenced theories. The text chronicles the pivotal role of the 17th and 18th centuries in advancing the understanding of tuberculosis, with an emphasis on the work of Sylvius, Morton, and others who recognized the specific nature of tubercles. The author illuminates the 19th century as a turning point, showcasing Bayle's foundational work on tubercular pathology and Laennec's groundbreaking development of physical methods for diagnosing tuberculosis of the lungs. However, the author also sheds light on the confusion caused by Virchow's dualistic views, which hindered progress until Koch's discovery of the tubercle bacillus in 1882. The author expertly summarizes the profound impact of Koch's discovery, explaining how it enabled the identification and classification of tubercular lesions, leading to more accurate diagnosis and treatment. The text concludes by emphasizing the immense interest in tuberculosis that Koch's discovery generated, highlighting the subsequent experimental work and public health initiatives that have shaped our understanding and prevention of this disease.
