Now viewed in a favourable light, Panizzi was a controversial figure in his own time, being dubbed a 'fat pedant' by Thomas Carlyle, who was moved to press for the creation of the London Library as a result of the Italian's high-handed behaviour. On 7 x 4 cm piece of grey paper, presumably cut fr…om an album. No othe writing on the slip other than Panizzi's compact and disciplined signature 'A Panizzi.' In good condition, lightly aged, Strips of sunning at top and right edge, but nowhere near the signature. See scan.

Al culmine di una prestigiosa carriera in Inghilterra, che lo aveva portato nel 1856 alla direzione del British Museum, l'esule emiliano Antonio Panizzi componeva nel 1863 un dettagliato resoconto sulla difficile situazione dei…territori già borbonici, verificata direttamente in occasione di un lungo soggiorno a Napoli. Nei due memoriali inviati a Emanuele d'Azeglio, ambasciatore del Regno d'Italia a Londra, e a Marco Minghetti, presidente del Consiglio, il "terribile Panizzi" (così lo aveva definito il "re Bomba", Ferdinando II di Borbone, nel 1851) affrontava, col consueto piglio spregiudicato e polemico, molti aspetti della questione meridionale (brigantaggio, sistema carcerario, amministrazione della giustizia, assetto istituzionale, rapporti col clero e con i funzionari del passato regime), nel momento decisivo dell'affermazione e del consolidamento della nuova autorità politica e civile. Uno dei pochi che apprezzò in maniera convinta quelle pagine fu d'Azeglio; molti altri protagonisti dell'epopea risorgimentale guardarono invece con fastidio alle recriminazioni di Panizzi, che con questo atto concludeva una lunga battaglia per la causa dell'indipendenza e dell'Unità.
