Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The Danse Macabre of Women is a 15th-century French poem found in a lavishly illuminated late medieval manuscript. The only Dance of Death devoted entirely to women, it was written by an anonymous author and subsequently expanded by several poet/editors. In this version, one of the later productions, 36 women are called in the midst of their bustling daily lives to join the eternal Dance of Death. Young and old, rich and poor, widow, matron, and child?each is the focus of two short poelms written in the form of a dialogue (Death calls and the victim replies) and accompanied by an illumination (or a miniature). The combined text and illumination forms a valuable social document describing these Parisian women and their preoccupations, pleasures, and attitudes toward death and the life they are leaving. The manuscript thus affords an occasion for social, historical, and anthropological insight. Because it post-dates the popular printed editions published by Guyot Marchant in Paris beginning in 1486, it also offers an opportunity to study the dynamic interactions between manuscript and print, between popular and high culture, in the early years of the Renaissance. The book contains reproductions of each manuscript folio, five in full color, a transliteration and translation into English of the text (on facing pages), and explanatory chapters by Ann Tukey Harrison and by art historian Sandra L. Hindman.Readers interested in art, art history, women's studies, literature, culture, and paleography as an artistic form will find this volume essential.…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 4to (26 cm), x, 163 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf-wear). First edition. The first modern critical edition of the Danse Macabre des Femmes, a fifteenth-century French poem preserved most fully in the lavishly illuminated manuscript B.N. fr. 995, the only known Dance of Death cycle devoted exclusively to women. The poem presents thirty-six women of different social ranks, from queen to peasant, each summoned by Death in a paired dialogue accompanied by a miniature. The edition reproduces every folio of the manuscript photographically, facing a diplomatic transcription and English translation, including Robert Marek's translation of the manuscript's Latin verses. It further includes a variorum of the seven surviving manuscript witnesses, a detailed codicological description and provenance of B.N. fr. 995, and descriptions of related manuscripts and early printed editions, including the Paris editions issued by Guyot Marchant from 1486 onwards. Five of the manuscript reproductions are in colour. Sandra L. Hindman's substantial contribution examines the relationship between the manuscript's imagery and that of the earlier printed tradition, arguing that the pictorial programme was significantly elaborated and "upgraded" for an aristocratic audience. An important study and edition of one of the most unusual manifestations of the medieval Danse Macabre, of particular interest for the history of manuscript illumination, women's representation, and the transition from manuscript to early printed book.…
