Il demeure une destination privilégiée, mais la méconnaissance des langues qui y sont parlées… prive bien des visiteurs d'un accès à une partie de ses formes d'expression. --------------------------- Cet ouvrage est d'abord un recueil de courts textes qui appartiennent à la tradition orale, traduits en langue française à partir de l'arabe populaire ou des différents parlers berbères. ------------------------------ Dès le début du XXe siècle, des étrangers vivant au Maroc se sont passionnés pour les langues non écrites du pays et les cultures qui s'exprimaient à travers elles ; des lettrés marocains ont apporté leurs pierres à ces études. Mais toutes ces collectes ne représentent qu'une partie d'un patrimoine immémorial probablement très riche. Par ailleurs, la traduction ne peut prétendre restituer tout l'esprit des textes ; elle en permet cependant une approche. ------------------------------- Ce même XXe siècle a vu naître une littérature écrite directement en français par des Marocains, notamment dans les formes intimes et spontanées du désir d'écrire, c'est-à-dire dans la poésie. Elle trouve tout naturellement sa place dans ce livre à côté des textes issus de la littérature orale. ------------------------------- En prologue, quelques citations d'auteurs du passé, marocains ou non, ont été retenues pour le regard particulier qui y est porté sur le pays. ---------------------------- Les illustrations placées vis-à-vis des textes leur sont liées par des correspondances plus ou moins littérales, et ne prétendent pas remplacer les visions éveillées par les écrits dans l'imaginaire de chacun.
