According to the views generally adopted at present, all those Vertebrate animals are referred to the Class of Fishes, which living in water, breathe air dissolved in water by means of gills or branchiae, whose heart consists of a single ventricle and single atrium, whose limbs, if present are modified into fins, supplemented by unpaired, median fins, and whose skin is either naked or covered with scales of osseous plates or bucklers. With few exceptions fishes are oviparous. However, there are not a few members of this class which show a modification of one or more of these characteristics, as we shall see hereafter, and which nevertheless, cannot be separated from it. The distinction between the class of fishes and that of Batrachians is very slight indeed. The Branch of zoology which treats of the internal and external structure of fishes, their mode of life and their distribution in space and time is termed Ichthyology. …

Hardcover. Condition: Good. STONER, E.C. 1899-1968. "The Distribution of Electrons among Atomic Levels," in a full volume of "The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science" London, 1924, Taylor & Francis, vol 48, sixth series, July-December. Vii, (I), 1144pp, with the Stoner on pp 719-736. Ina cloth library binding--there are library stamps on the text block ends (top, bottom, side); there are two perofated stamps on front free ep and title page; oddly there are no stamps on the spine. GOOD copy, with reinforced hinges. [++] "In 1924 Stoner wrote a paper on the distribution of electrons among atomic levels. In the preface of the fourth edition of his classic book, Atomic structure and spectral lines, Arnold Sommerfeld gave special mention to einen grossen Fortschritt [a great advancement] brought about by Stoner's analysis, which then came to the attention of Wolfgang Pauli, and played an important role in his formulation of the exclusion principle in quantum physics."--"Edmund C. Stoner and the Discovery of the Maximum Mass of White Dwarfs" by Michael Nauenberg, JHA, xxxix (2008), pg 297. [++] "E(dmund) C(lifton) Stoner is principally known for his outstanding work on the origin and nature of magnetism but his early work on the distribution of electrons among atomic levels in 1924 [in the paper offered here] was also remarkable. At this time the modern theory of quantum mechanics had not been discovered. Stoner's inductive findings became later encapsulated in the quantum mechanical Pauli exclusion principle for which Pauli received the Nobel Prize. In addition he had a lifelong interest in astrophysics and discovered, in 1932 [with Chandrasekhar in a paper I offer elsewhere on ABE] the maximum or limiting mass of a white dwarf star."--Condensed Matter pages at Leeds UK online. [The 1932 Chandra paper follows Stoner s earlier work,  The limiting density in white dwarfs , in the "Philosophical Magazine," vii (1929), 63 70, which I also offer elsewhere here on ABE, catalogued under Stoner .] [++] "[Stoner's] 1924 paper on [the absorption of X-rays by matter and electron energy levels] prefigured the Pauli exclusion principle."--Wikipedia [++] "The publication of his paper (the paper offered) brought Stoner rapid recognition. His theory, however, was subsequently overshadowed by the exclusion principle of Wolfgang Pauli, who, exploiting Stoner's insight and applying it to individual electrons, transformed it into a general and powerful analytic tool."--Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography online [++] Also bound with J.J. Thomson, "On the Electric Discharge through gases of very low pressures", July 1924, pp 2-33.…
