This richly detailed reference traces the development of the charming night lights of the 19th century, especially those patented by Samuel Clarke of England, combining aesthetic study with practical collecting guidance. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white plates and diagrams, it remains one of the most frequently cited early works on antique lighting and decorative glass. With an introduction by Marjorie M. Smith, editor of Spinning Wheel magazine. This copy is Very Good in a Good dust jacket. Bound in textured red boards with black spine lettering; clean and square with tight binding. Pages are bright and unmarked with only mild toning. The dust jacket retains its distinctive pink color but shows moderate shelf wear, chipping at the spine head and foot, and light foxing on the interior flaps. Jacket edges display minor creases and a small tear at the rear bottom edge. Laid in is a vintage newspaper clipping titled 'Camphene Lamps Were Dangerous', likely kept by a prior collector, an appropriate and appealing ephemera piece accompanying this copy. Amelia E. MacSwiggan (1898 - 1970) was an American antiques scholar and curator, formerly Assistant Curator of the Museum of the Essex Institute in Salem, Massachusetts. A contributor to Antiques Journal, Hobbies Magazine, and Spinning Wheel, she was known for her scholarship on Victorian glass and lighting. Fairy Lamps: Evening's Glow of Yesteryear remains her definitive work, combining historical rigor with the warmth of a lifelong collector?s passion. Jacket design by Mike Mauceri (illustrator).
