Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Size: Frame 31 x 41 cm, print image 16.5 x 25 cm Condition: Print frame and mount all in very good condition This absolutely gorgeous print is from a faithful re-engraving of The Flight into Egypt by Martin Schoengauer, an important German engraver who made his original engraving in c1480. Charles Amand Durand pioneered the use of a photo-mechanical method called heliogravure (usually called photogravure in English) to reproduce the engraved lines of the Schoengauer print from a good original impression. The result was a copper plate which could be printed like an original etching, producing a print of the finest quality, often better than later impressions of the original etching. Close inspection of this print shows that it is indeed a print from an etched copper plate, not a lithograph as many reproductions are. The print is on watermarked Van Gelder paper, and has the imprint of Amand Durand under the image. Schoengauer was the first engraver to use his initials consistently on his prints, and they can be seen in the image. The story depicted is of The Holy Family's Flight into Egypt, fleeing the Massacre of the Innocents and their home in Israel. The work reflects some traditional accounts of the story, in which angels lowered date palms for easy harvesting, so Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child would not starve. There are some lovely details, such as the lizards on the palms, the deer and the farmstead in the background. Martin Schoengauer (c 1430/50-1491) was one of the most prolific early engravers from the Rhine Valley. Schoengauers engravings inspired generations of artists, including Albrecht D rer. Charles Amand Durand (1837-1917) was a French engraver who was recognized particularly for his ability to reproduce the fine details and nuances of Old Master prints, often when the original plates were damaged or lost. Durand also produced his own engravings, which were highly regarded and exhibited at the Paris Salon. He was also an important teacher of engraving at the cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he trained many of the leading engravers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His influence on the art of engraving can still be seen today, and his work continues to be highly collectible and admired by art lovers and collectors around the world. The frame of the print is early 20th century, the mount is new. Martin Schoengauer (illustrator).…
