Bound in contemporary leather over boards, newer spine with title stamped in gilt; five raised bands, six compartments. Newer endpapers, title leaf printed in red-and-black with floral vignette. Accompanied by additional in-text vignettes, and elaborate initial letters throughout. Light scuffing to leather extremities, typical edgewear, ex-libris bookplate of the Memorial Library of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons neatly affixed to the front pastedown, some marginal darkening to the preliminary leaves, circular institutional stamp to the half-title. Otherwise a lovely, well-margined and overwhelmingly bright and unmarked offering of a foundational work of medical diagnosis and prognosis. Complete with a preface by renowned Dutch physician Herman Boerhaave (sometimes referred to as the "Dutch Hippocrates"), dated September 22, 1709, in Leiden, wherein he relates his high regard for the present work as an indispensable and comprehensive medical resource. Noting the extreme rarity and numerous textual errors of a prior Frankfurt edition, he explains that he commissioned one Rudolphus Dyker of Emden to meticulously correct and edit the text for this much-improved edition. Divided into seven distinct sections, or books ("Libri"), with each focusing upon different elements of medical diagnosis and prognostics: "Liber Primus" (Book 1): Focuses on the foundational principles of medical prognosis, specifically how physicians can predict recovery or death by evaluating the overall robustness or weakness of a patient's natural and vital faculties, as well as the magnitude and nature of the disease itself; "Liber Secundus" (Book 2): Examines prognostic signs derived from the patient's neurological and sensory states. It covers mental conditions such as delirium, memory loss, and foolishness, as well as disturbances in external senses such as vision and hearing, before moving into physical sensations such as body temperature variations, pain, fatigue, and sleep patterns; "Liber Tertius" (Book 3): Concerns signs related to the patient's motor faculties and physical movements including analyzing the patient's posture in bed, restlessness, involuntary movements such as tremors, palpitations, and convulsions, as well as hiccups, shivering, and the loss of voice; "Liber Quartus" (Book 4): Dedicated primarily to the observation of vital functions, beginning with a detailed classification of the pulse - its causes, variations, and what it indicates for survival or death. It subsequently covers different types of respiration (breathing patterns) and evaluates the prognostic value of the patient's appetite and thirst; "Liber Quintus" (Book 5): Details the prognostic signs observable in specific anatomical parts and the patient's physical appearance. It instructs the physician to examine skin color, facial features (eyes, nose, lips, teeth, tongue), the abdominal region (hypochondria), and the extremities to forecast the disease's progression; "Liber Sextus" (Book 6): Introduces the concept of medical "crises" and "critical days" (the specific days when a disease is expected to reach a turning point). It outlines how to recognize whether a disease will terminate via a "crisis" and identifies the signs which may predict upcoming salutary (healing) or fatal crises, often indicated by bodily excretions; "Liber Septimus" (Book 7): Serves as a comprehensive guide to interpreting specific bodily fluids and excretions to determine the final outcome of a given ailment. It breaks down the prognostic significance of blood, sweat, vomit, bowel movements, urine, sputum, and suppuration from abscesses, detailing which types indicate recovery and which portend death. 4 parts in 1 volume. Early Leiden edition of an important work on Egyptian medicine, written by the Venetian physician and botanist Prosper Alpinus (1553-1617). The present work includes a work on tropical medicine by Dutch physician Jacob de Bondt (or Jacobus Bontius, 1592-1631), which can only be found in the Dutch editions of Medicine Aegyptiorum, and a text by Alpinus (De rhapontico) which can only be found in the present edition.Medicine Aegyptiorum was first published in Venice in 1591, then three times in Paris in 1645-1646, and then in Leiden in 1718, where it was combined with De Bondt's work for the first time. The present edition is a re-issue of the 1718 edition, but with a new title page and an extra part. This extra part, De rhapontico, had been published separately in 1612, but was not published again until it was included in the present work. It discusses the therapeutic properties of rhubarb and is written in the form of a dialogue between Alpinus, an Egyptian physician, and a Jew. The other work by Alpinus included here, De balsamo dialogus, discusses the source of balsam and raises questions concerning its identity, ancient names and medical uses. It is written in the same format as De rhapontico.The final text included here is De medicina Indorum, libri IV by De Bondt, which had been separately published in 1642. De Bondt, who regarded tropical medicine as an independent branch of medical science, spent several years in the Dutch East Indies where he studied the local medical practices. The work includes the first European description of beriberi and cholera.The head of the spine is somewhat worn, with a horizontal tear in the vellum obscuring the manuscript title, a brown stain on the back board. The pastedowns are detached from the boards, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact, the edges of the leaves are slightly browned, the last few leaves are stained at the bottom margin from the brown stain on the back board.
