Es dominiert die Männerwelt, welche es mit ihren Taten bis in die Geschichtsbücher der Gegenwart geschafft hat. Auch über den bayerischen Kurfürst Max Emanuel sind vorwiegend politische Geschehnisse überliefert, die Privatsphäre des Fürsten wird nur selten in Biografien durchleuchtet. Ein noch selteneres Bild in der Geschichtsschreibung ist der Umgang mit Frauen außerhalb der Ehe. Gerade zu Lebzeiten des Kurfürsten, in der Blütezeit des Barock, war es für Monarchen selbstverständlich mindestens eine Geliebte zu haben - die sogenannte Mätresse.Obwohl Mätressen einen enormen Einfluss auf die politischen Entscheidungen des Monarchen gewinnen konnten, sind sie in der Forschungsliteratur kaum ausführlicher untersucht worden. Im Folgenden soll gezielt auf die Mätressen des bayerischen Kurfürsten Max Emanuel (1662 - 1726) eingegangen werden. Zu diesem Themenkomplex gibt es in der modernen Forschung kein gesondertes Werk, sondern die Mätressen werden in verschiedenen Biografien nur am Rande behandelt. Die folgende Arbeit soll einen Überblick verschaffen, über die Gesamtheit der Mätressen des Kurfürsten Max Emanuels und auf die Beziehung eingehen, in welcher der Kurfürst zu den einzelnen Mätressen stand. Die meisten Informationen zu diesem Thema findet man in der hierfür hauptsächlich verwendeten Biografie: Ludwig Hüttl. Max Emanuel. Der blaue Kurfürst. 1679 - 1726. Eine politische Biografie. Fasziniert von Goethe und Mozart war es Grabbes Intention, die beiden Hauptcharaktere, nämlich Faust und Don Juan, in ihrer Gegensätzlichkeit miteinander zu verknüpfen und beide als Gegenspieler in ein und demselben Werk darzustellen. Mit der Wahl des welthistorischen Roms als Handlungsort für das Drama, ist es Grabbe gelungen die beiden legendären Individuen Faust und Don Juan geschickt miteinander in Verbindung zu bringen, da Rom Grabbes Auffassung nach 'im Augenblick [der] Jahrtausende verschmolzen' ist und Grabbes wesentliche Einstellung zur Geschichtsauffassung widerspiegelt: Nämlich, dass alles von Menschenhand geschaffene nicht ewig bestehend bleibt, sondern vergänglich ist. Gerade dieses negative Weltbild Grabbes, welches unumstritten aus seinen persönlichen Lebenserfahrungen rührt, lässt erkennen, dass Grabbe, welcher in einem Zeitalter aufwuchs, das von einem durch und durch geistlichen Denken bestimmt war, selbst in eine tiefe seelische Not geraten war, welche seine Welt gottesleer erscheinen ließ. Die Frage nach dem Wesen Gottes, sowie nach dem Sinn des Seins war für Grabbe essentiell und er bemühte sich zeitlebens eine Antwort darauf zu finden, welche ihm persönlich das Leben wieder lebenswert erscheinen lassen sollte. Dieses Streben nach dem Wesen des Göttlichen und dem Sinn des menschlichen Daseins prägte Grabbe zutiefst und spiegelt sich auch in seinem Drama Don Juan und Faust wieder.
