(slight shelfwear), still NF/NF copy, signed by the author on ffep., from the library of Elof Axel Carlson (1931-2025), noted geneticist, historian of science, and fierce opponent of eugenics, ownership marking dated Feb. 2, 1966, w/ a couple pencil annotation text corrections by Carlson. First edition, 2nd printing (code L-P on verso, Nov., 1965) of this excellent "synthesis and evaluation of events in the history of genetics. . . the author does not hesitate to draw upon his own extensive and hitherto unpublished knowledge to create something of the exciting atmosphere of the 'fly room' at Columbia." Sturtevant (1891-1970) was a core member of Thomas Hunt Morgan's research team that laid the foundations for modern genetics, and in 1913 built the first genetic map of a chromosome. By 1928 he became professor of genetics at CalTech, worked with Nobel Prize-winner George Beadle, and later the 1965 John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science, and the 1967 National Medal of Science. Morgan did choose in 1933 to share his Nobel Prize money with Sturtevant and Bridges.…
