Leather-bound; hardcover; duodecimo (18 x 12 x 3 cm); pp. vi, [2], 336, [59]. English text. Handsomely bound in contemporary speckled calf; smooth spine with gilt bands and red morocco lettering-piece; two folding engraved maps; printed footnotes; rear index. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Binding tight and secure, the hinges and joints intact. Slight abrasions to covers. Textblock well-preserved, some very light toning, the maps excellent, and without previous ownership markings. An attractive copy and scarce thus. Notes: Rare first edition of this significant 18th-century work documenting the City of Edinburgh's development. It provides detailed historical context, and is sometimes confused with the similar 1788 work by Hugo Arnot. Here presented in the original binding and compete with two engraved maps. It also includes a useful 59 page Gazeteer of the County of Edinburgh to the rear of the book.

Kincaid the younger did not show the aptitude necessary to take on his father?s significant printing business, which went to the adopted apprentice William Creech instead, but he did operate within the Edinburgh book trade for some years as a writer, bookseller, and printer?s ink-maker. The frontispiece i…s a large (21x40 cm.) map of the world. There are also maps of England & Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Scandinavia, Russia and several of the ancient world. The most extensive sections of the text are devoted to England, Scotland and Ireland. The title page indicates "the whole executed on a plan similar to that of W. Guthrie, Esq." While only one volume of a two-volume set, this is nonetheless a scarce 18th century geography. OCLC 1264969976 (7 loc.).
