Condition: NEAR FINE. First printing. In the 1920s and 1930s, Beliaev was the best selling Soviet science fiction writer - sometimes called "Russia's Jules Verne." This classic science fiction and horror story, originally published in 1925, features a mad scientist secretly performing experimental head transplantations on bodies stolen from the morgue and a beautiful young woman, hired as his assistant, who befriends the head of Professor Dowell. Although written more than a hundred years ago, this "foresees not only organ transplants but also . the use of mental hospitals as prisons and the manipulation of the news media." A title in Macmillan's "Best of Soviet SF" series with an introduction by Theodore Sturgeon, who comments that Beliaev was writing at the same time as Weird Tales was transforming US science fiction.
