Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an in-depth exploration of the historical significance of the subterranean undercroft beneath the Palermo Cathedral in Sicily. The author traces the undercroft's origins as a subterranean church for early Christians, then its subsequent use as a burial ground for archbishops and noblemen. Through an analysis of the tombs and sculptures found within, the author sheds light on the evolution of artistic styles and cultural influences that shaped Sicily over many centuries. By examining the historical context and thematic depth of the undercroft, this book offers valuable insights into the complex tapestry of Sicilian history, art, and religion, providing a fascinating glimpse into a hidden gem that has played a significant role in the island's cultural heritage.
