Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Remains of a price tag on the cover. Text in English. 323 pp. The Department of History at the University of Oulu in Finland organized the Conference on Imagology and Cross-cultural Encounters in History on August 29-31, 2007. The papers presented at the conference are published here. The purpose of the conference was firstly to consider utilization of an imagological viewpoint in the study of history in general. The themes included national and international symbols, persons and groups of people, but also images, as explaining factors in political and economic decision-making. Secondly, the conference examined interaction between cultures, because it has always been apparent how difficult it is to understand others and dissimilarity. Images of others and dissimilarity are similar to a biological territory that protects one's own species. The purpose of the conference was to shed light on these problems through examples from different ages, which provide an additional perspective in examining corresponding phenomena today. If we understand the processes related to images, we can also understand ourselves better.

This book is based on the papers presented in the The Barents and the Baltic Sea region: contacts, influences and social change symposium that took place at the University of Oulu on December 10th-11th, 2015. It was an international event organized by the Department of History and Transcultural Encounters Research Center (TCERC). The symposium continued series of researcher meetings at the University of Oulu. These contribute to Arctic and Nordic research, both of which belong to the university's focal areas. The symposium focuses on cultural, economic, political, religious, social and other phenomena that affect the region and its relationships with the surrounding world. All in all, the aim of the symposium was to analyze the characteristics of the Barents and Baltic Sea region from interdisciplinary perspectives. Articles in this book are in English and in Finnish. Osa artikkelista on kirjoitettu suomeksi ja osa englanniksi. 9789529888603.

Condition: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | The book provides a comprehensive picture of the Finnish and Lithuanian minority policies between the World Wars. The work also offers an opportunity to compare Finland and Lithuania as well as individual minority groups in this respect. Both countries opted for a policy that was quite tolerant by the standards of the time, but not all minorities were treated in the same way. It is evident that changes in political governance also affected the relationship between the majority (titular) population and national minorities.

This study examines the rhetoric used by the great powers in the United Nations Security Council in the context of the international crises that occurred between 1946 and 1956. The topic is an important one, in that, first and foremost, the arguments the great powers presented to the public in the context of various international crises represent integral parts of those powers political agendas. Thus these arguments warrant a fundamental assessment. Additionally, the United Nations Security Council, which became functional in early 1946, represented the most central and enduring forum for debating international crises after the Second World War. To the great powers, the Security Council represented a public forum of sorts, one where they might justify their political positions, undermine the policies of their opponents, or sway the dissenting nations around to their point of view.

Over the past two decades, scholarship on modern Finnish and Nordic history has been shaped by two intersecting historiographical developments: the transnational turn and the expanding fields of intelligence and national security studies. These approaches have encouraged historians to move beyond nationally bounded narratives and to consider how the circulation of people, information, and ideas transcended political borders. The result has been a growing recognition that Finland's experience—from the late nineteenth century through the early Cold War—cannot be understood in isolation but must be examined as part of broader regional and global processes. Agents, Exiles, and Alliances: Finland's Global Entanglements, 1899-1949 contributes to that conversation by bringing together new research on the political, security, and intelligence dimensions of Finland's history within international and comparative contexts. Contents: Introduction Henry Oinas-Kukkonen, The "Finnish Exiles' Club" for Independence - The Finnish Resistance Organisation the Kagaali in New York Aappo Kähönen, Security Policy, Intelligence and Immigration in the Early Finnish-Soviet Relations, 1920-1933 Hanna Aranne, Finnish Intelligence Activities and Relations in Early 20th Century Manchuria Kari Alenius, Michel S. Beaulieu & David K. Ratz, The "Pentikäinen Case" in Finland in 1933: The Beginning of the Revelation of a Soviet Spy Network in Europe Pekka Tuomikoski, Lightning War of lnformation and Broad-Based Influence: State Propaganda in the Year the Continuation War Began, 1941 Janne Timonen, Norway's Path to NATO: The Finnish Press's Perceptions of Norway's Defence Solution in 1948-1949 Contributors.
