En ella recogemos los textos que escribio durante su viaje, acompanado del naturalista frances Aime Jacques Alexandre Bonpland, entre 1799 y 1804.A pesar de ser el primer geografo e historiador de la America espanola, el ba…ron aleman no tenia entre sus objetivos recorrer la America equinoccial. Tampoco planeo visitar el virreinato de la Nueva Granada que, sin embargo, lo deslumbro.El proposito de visitar Latinoamerica y la escritura de este Breviario del Nuevo Mundo, surge cuando fracasa su idea de explorar el continente africano. En 1799 se dirige a Espana con el fin de solicitar los permisos necesarios para llegar a America.Durante todo el viaje por el Nuevo Continente, Bonpland y Humboldt recolectaron numerosas plantas y estudiaron mas de un millar de especies. Humboldt tambien se intereso en la distribucion geografica y altitudinal de las plantas. Levanto perfiles de mapas sobre la distribucion de diversas asociaciones vegetales y recogio estos datos en este Breviario del Nuevo Mundo.En sus viajes descubrio el principio ecologico de la relacion entre la latitud y la altitud. Humboldt descubrio que subir una montana en el tropico es analogo a viajar desde el Ecuador hacia el norte o hacia el sur. Siendo demostrable, en terminos de clima y vegetacion. Humboldt afirma en esta obra que buena parte de las costas cubanas no han sido recogidas en mapas precisos. Demuestra, ademas que por entonces se desconocia…n las profundidades de sus aguas y las coordenadas geograficas necesitaban ser corregidas. La aproximacion de Humboldt a Cuba no es solo de caracter estrictamente cientifico, no solo se interesa por su fauna, su flora o su geologia. Nuestro autor va un paso mas alla y analiza tambien las condiciones socioeconomicas y los factores que pueden contribuir al esplendor o la decadencia de la isla: En los paises donde se han ejecutado grandes operaciones geodesicas, el trazar y redactar un mapa se reduce a una operacion grafica de suma sencillez, y cesan las combinaciones, cuando por una serie no interrumpida de triangulos se han determinado con exactitud las relaciones de distancia y de situacion. La geografia de la America dista mucho de aquel estado de perfeccion, en que no se marcha a tientas y en que no es dificil la eleccion entre materiales de un valor muy desigual. Una gran parte de las costas (en el norte de Cuba, en Choco, en Guatemala y en Mexico, desde Tehuantepec hasta San Blas) no han sido todavia reconocidas cuidadosamente. Algunas posiciones astronomicas sin conexion pueden unicamente guiar al geografo en el interior de las tierras. Cuando tales puntos, suficientemente comparados, se agrupan por sistemas y se reunen por medio de lineas cronometricas, la certidumbre es mucho mayor, pero para evitar en adelante el inconveniente de variaciones parciales que se intenten acerca de puntos que dependen unos de otros, es indispensable exponer en el analisis de cada mapa la clase de elementos que han servido de base para hacerlo. Asi es como en los trabajos que hice en la America meridional, los llanos de Venezuela, el Orinoco, el Casiquiare y el Rio Negro forman un solo sistema de oposiciones unido por la transposicion del tiempo a Cumana y a Caracas, cuya posicion se funda en observaciones astronomicas absolutas.Ensayo politico sobre la isla de Cuba es tambien libro clave en el analisis de la esclavitud en el Caribe en la primera mitad del siglo XIX.
