En febrero de 1960, Juan Luis Alborg defendía en la Universidad de Madrid su tesis doctoral, Cronistas latinos de América en la España del siglo XVI, una obra que nadie supo del todo calibrar. Su objetivo fundamental era estudiar tres crónicas de Indias redactadas en latín -las Decades de Pedro Mártir de Anglería, el De rebus Hispanorum gestis de Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda y el De rebus Indicis de Juan Cristóbal Calvete de Estrella- para analizar cómo sus autores habían logrado verter en la lengua de Roma las realidades inéditas del Nuevo Mundo. Tras su defensa, Alborg se trasladó a Estados Unidos, donde desarrolló la carrera como historiador de la literatura española que le dio renombre, con lo que su trabajo sobre las crónicas latinas quedó prácticamente sin circulación ni influencia. La osadía del proyecto era doble: reivindicar las crónicas de Indias, género tenido por menor cuando no directamente despreciado, y hacerlo sobre obras escritas en latín humanístico, territorio considerado yermo por los clasicistas españoles de la época.
