Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. viii, 243pp, bound in green cloth, with the binding and hinges tight, includes the photographic frontis-piece. NO LABELS, INSCRIPTIONS, NOR MARKINGS. Two pages show a small taped, closed tear. James Augustus Healy (1830-1900), was the first African American Roman Catholic Bishop. He presided over a diocese covering Maine and New Hampshire for 25 years. He was the son of an Irish Immigrant, Michael Healy, who became a properous plantation owner in Georgia, and a mulatto woman who was actually a slave. After ordination Father Healy was assigned to Bishop John Fitzpatrick's Boston Diocese, and finally became pastor of St. James Church in Boston. He was 45 years old when his appointment came to be the second Bishop of Portland, Maine. Because he was half Irish he bonded with the parishioners on Munjoy Hill, many of whom were recent arrivals from Ireland. He spoke fluent French, which endeared him to the Acadians of Northern Maine.
