Leather Binding. Condition: Very Good. Later Printing. MARK TWAIN'S COPY, signed and dated by him on recto of frontispiece 'S.L. Clemens London 1874' in pencil. Also bears the mounted printed bookplate reading 'This volume is from the library of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain).' signed by Albert Bigelow Paine, noting that it was 'Sold February, 1911, by the Anderson Auction Company' of New York. Bound in 3/4 red polished calf over marbled boards by Zaehnsdord for A.C. McClurg, spine with raised bands, twin burgundy morocco labels, and elaborate gilt tooling with 'Mark Twain's Copy' in gilt at foot, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers (some rubbing to extremities). Ainsworth's Jack Sheppard, the most notorious novel of its time and the first of what were to be referred to as Newgate novels, was first published in 1839-1840. Although it is recorded that Twain Twain did not own a copy of the work until he purchased this copy in 1874, he repeatedly mentioned the tale of Jack Sheppard in writings and speeches as early as 1855. These references include: I) Twain's story 'Jul'us Caesar' written around 1855-56. ('Jul'us Caesar' was first published in 1979 in Early Tales & Sketches, Vol. 1.]; II) a contribution to the 'Territorial Enterprise', January 1866 (reprinted in Mark Twain's San Francisco, edited by Bernard Taper, (McGraw Hill, 1963); III) in a speech to the Middlesex Club, Boston, November 6, 1880, celebrating Republican election wins and the defeat of Democratic Senator William Henry Barnum of Connecticut, whom Twain claimed was 'conspicuous to the end of his life as the man who has simply made Jack Sheppard respectable.' PROVENANCE: I) Mark Twain's copy, signed by him; II) leather bookplate of John Stuart Groves; III) ink inscription of noted American poet William Matchett.
