Er deutet die erotischen Gruppen in ihrem kulturellen Kontext und gibt damit einen Gesamtüberblick über die Gattung.Die sogenannten erotisch…en Gruppen gehören zu den charakteristischen und verhältnismäßig reich belegten Schöpfungen der Plastik des 2. und 1. Jahrhunderts vor Christi. Gleichwohl fiel der archäologischen Forschung die Beschäftigung mit diesen Werken nicht leicht: das Thema galt offenbar als anstößig, viele Stücke wurden trotz ihrer hohen Qualität in die Museumsmagazine verbannt. Der Autor geht der Frage nach, weshalb die Darstellung sexueller Handlungen gerade zu einem Zeitpunkt Thema der Plastik wird, der sich eher durch eine restriktive Sexmoral auszeichnet. Er untersucht die umfassende Neuorientierung des gesamten Bereichs dionysischer religiöser Erfahrung und der Bildsprache, die dieser Erfahrung Ausdruck verlieh. Die Arbeit stellt nicht nur einen wichtigen Beitrag zur hellenistischen Kulturgeschichte und zum Verständnis hellenistischer Skulptur dar, sondern hat auch exemplarischen Charakter für die Interpretation erotischer Darstellungen und ihr Verhältnis zur Geschichte der Sexualität. Ein Katalog der freiplastischen Darstellungen erotischer Gruppen der Zeit schließen den Band ab. 1400 gr.
