This is a pioneering book on the chemistry of soils and plants (Partington III, pp 169-172. The first English edition (1770) lists Gyllenborg as author. First edition of a thesis on the role of chemistry in the development of agri…culture, by the Swedish Count Gustaf Adolf Gyllenborg (1743-1789) and with the Swedish chemist and mineralogist Johan Gottschalk Wallerius (1709-1785) as praeses. It established the notion that the chemical composition of both the plants and the soil were to be comparatively studied, which became the basic principle of agricultural chemistry. "In accord with the utilitarian tendencies of the time, Wallerius, as professor of chemistry, was called upon to show what his knowledge could contribute to economic social life. . Wallerius' interest in agriculture naturally led him to pursue agricultural chemistry, especially since agriculture was of great importance for the national economy. His research proved so basic and of such scope that he was called the father of agricultural chemistry" (DSB). The text is included in Latin with the Swedish text on the parallel page. Wallerius categorizes different types of soils based on their chemical and physical properties, such as clay, sand, loam, and peat. He examines how various minerals and organic substances contribute to soil fertility. The book discusses how plants take up nutrients from the soil, an early concept of plant physiology and nutrition. Wallerius identifies key nutrients required for plant health, including the roles of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which were later recognized as essential macronutrients. Wallerius describes the importance of water retention and drainage in soils. The book discusses the decomposition of organic matter, the formation of humus, and the interactions between plant roots and soil chemistry.
