Seine Autobiografie ist ein Stuck osterreichischer Zeit-, Kultur- und Medizingeschichte. Adolf Lorenz, 1854 in einfache Verhaltnissen geboren, entwickelte als Chirurg alternative, nichtoperative Heilmethoden fur angeborene Huftgelenksverrenkungen und andere anatomische Missbildungen. Dank grosser und spektakularer Erfolge mit dieser neu entwickelten Heilmethode war er ab 1902 ein weltbekannter Mediziner - in Osterreich und den USA. Auf seinem in Altenberg errichteten Landsitz zwanzig Kilometer nordwestlich von Wien wuchs Konrad Lorenz auf, der in der grossen Gartenanlage zahlreiche Tiere halten konnte und spater immer wieder darauf hinwies, auf welch glucklichen Umstanden seine Karriere als Verhaltensforscher basierte. Uber seine 1936 erstmals veroffentlichte Autobiografie schrieb Adolf Lorenz: ,Ich hege die Hoffnung, dass mein Buch bei Jung und Alt, bei Arzten und Laien Anklang finden wird, weil es eine einfache und menschliche Geschichte von Gluck und Ungluck ist.".
