Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+ condition. Metuchen, New Jersey & London:: Scarecrow, 1976. A square, tight copy. Corners are NOT bumped. No owner's name or bookplate. A few pages with minor finger soil. Posthumously published collection of Farr's writings on statistics and public health. This 1976 edition has a new 12-page Introduction by Mervyn Susser and Abraham Adelstein. The 1885 original was edited for the Sanitary Institute of Great Britain by Noel A. Humphreys. There is also a biographical sketch of Farr, as well as a frontispiece portrait of him. Farr was chief statistician in England's General Register Office and a pioneer in the quantitative evaluation of morbidity and mortality statistics. For example, this book includes excerpts from his ENGLISH LIFE TABLE (1864, Longman & Co.) describing how a calculating machine, the Scheutz Engine #3, was first used to process census data and statistics related to 6.4 million deaths registered between 1838-54. This was the first time a mechanical calculator was applied to solve a health or biology question. Bound in the original green cloth, lettered in shiny gold on the spine and front cover.
