Hardcover. Gordon Ross (illustrator). "The Sir Roger De Coverley Papers" were originally written by Joseph Addison, Richard Steele, and Eustace Budgell for "The Spectator" in London 1711 - 1712. This Heritage Press reprint edition, subsequent to the Limited Editions Club issue, published in New York in 1945, includes the Prefatory Notes by William Makepeace Thackeray, and the color illustrations of Gordon Ross. It's a very handsome book , and the illustrations help to illuminate the 18th century humor found in each of the pieces which entail the mildly satiric stories of the fictional Sir Roger De Coverley. Collected together they present an episodic romp through the landed gentry of the British 18th century. I'm sure they were much appreciated then, but possibly even more so collected together in this modern format, with such amusingly handsome illustrations, and, of course, we can all enjoy the perceptive words of Thackeray to lead it all. VOLUME I ONLY of a two volume set. [frontis], [pictorial title], i-xv, [1], 1-414 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14cm. Contemporary full leather well scuffed; board corners worn; slender splitting to joints with front board slightly pliable towards top but rear board firm; shallow chipping at spine ends with surface abrasions adversely affecting gilt stamping plus losses to title label although gilt lettering at center remains discernable. Modern name-address label on front pastedown; old pencil inscription on ffep; antiquarian ink inscription on ffly with ink carry-through to frontis; antiquarian ink to rp; rfep removed but impressions from its antiquarian ink notes carrying through to preceding two flyleaves. Toning/foxing to interior leaves with some stains. Double-column text. Text block is firm. (Thirteen jpeg images of the book can be emailed upon request.).
