In November 1994, Iraq formally accepted the UN-d…emarcated border with Kuwait which had been spelled out in Security Council Resolutions 687 (1991), 773 (1992), and 883 (1993); this formally ends earlier claims to Kuwait and to Bubiyan and Warbah islands; ownership of Qaruh and Umm al Maradim islands disputed by Saudi Arabia. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia continue negotiating a joint maritime boundary with Iran; no maritime boundary exists with Iraq in the Persian Gulf.

Contact seller5-star sellerSOFT POWER: JESUIT-TRAINED CARDINALS ON SHOW; TWO RARE WORKS ILLUSTRATING THE OUTSIZED ROLE PLAYED BY JESUITS IN EARLY MODERN EDUCATION. Folio [32 x 22 cm]. (8), 39 pp, (5), 41-67 pp, (1), 67-196 [i.e. 186] pp, including allegorical engr. frontispiece, portrait of Alexander VII, portrait of Gregory XIII, and 29 plates in collati…on designed by Ciro Ferri and engraved by Guillaume Chasteau. Pages 171-180 omitted in pagination, as issued. Complete, despite the eccentric pagination. Frontispiece trimmed closely at outer edge with fraying and loss of a few mm of image; some toning and occasional staining and wrinkling to scattered leaves. Sole edition of this visual and biographical catalog of one of the crown jewels of the Jesuit education system: the Seminario Romano, founded in 1565. The prestigious Seminario was founded not to train future Jesuits who were unable to accept higher ecclesiastical offices but rather to train secular clerics who might one day become cardinals, and who would presumably look favorably upon the Society as a result. "Adami's Seminarii Romani Pallas Purpurata (1659) took a slightly different angle from the other [cardinal biographies]; it discussed all the alumni of this Jesuit institution who had reached the cardinal's rank and thereby advertised the benefits of a Jesuit education par exemple while, at the same time, making manifest the loyalty the Society expected from those whom its members had educated." (Pattenden, p. 445). Unable to celebrate a pantheon of Jesuit cardinals (Ignatius had all but forbidden the acceptance of high-ranking offices by members of his order), Adami (1620-1706) turns to the Seminario and its impressive ranks. The most illustrious alumnus was Gregory XIII, who is duly accorded a lengthy (31 pp) biography here, with occasional digressions into how his success illuminates that of Loyola and the Society. Following this are 29 engraved portraits of alumni promoted to the cardinalcy, each accompanied by a Latin verse encomium. The figures are arranged roughly chronologically, and several of them were still living at the time of publication. "Designed by Ciro Ferri and engraved by Guillaume Chasteau, the frontispiece represents Ecclesia, seated on clouds, approached on the right by Nobility, who directs her attention to the bundle of seedlings carried by an attendant putto; and on the left by Divine Wisdom, who offers her a platter of apples. Putti are at work in the garden, planting the seedlings (semina), tending the soil, watering the beds, and up above, harvesting the fruit of the trees that have grown to adulthood within the sheltering walls of the Seminary. The print illustrates, in charming allegorical language, the full cycle of a boy's education: from the arrival of the seedling and its matriculation in the garden to its maturity and fruition." (Rice). OCLC shows a single US copy (Harvard) and a single UK copy (BL). We note that both the British Library copy and the Casanata Library copy are very strongly browned. * De Backer/Sommervogel I col. 48 # 4; Rice, "Pomis sua nomina servant: The Emblematic Thesis Prints of the Roman Seminary" Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes Vol LXX (2008), pp. 195-246; Pattenden, "The Early Modern Historiography of Early Modern Cardinals", in A Companion to the Early Modern Cardinal (2019), pp. 435452. [bound with]: ACCADEMIA DEGLI ANIMOSI. Gibertum Borromaeum Barberinarum apum Augurio Laureatum Florulentum in Borromaeo Mari Braydenses Syrenes Canunt Concinunt. Colophon: Milan: Filippo Ghisolfi, [1634]. Folio. (46) pp, signed ?1, A-G2, [2G2], H-K2, ?1, as per Arrigoni. Elaborate engr. title signed by Giovanni Paolo Bianchi after Angelo Galli (described below). All text within typographical borders; and with 12 engraved medallion portraits in text including a further portrait of Giberto on H1r. Some light dampstaining to lower margin of scattered leaves; mainly very good. Second recorded copy of the earliest publication of the Accademia degli Animosi, a curious folio prepared by literary-minded students at the Jesuit College of Brera. The occasion was the graduation of the 18-year-old Giberto III Borromeo (1615-1672), who may or may not himself have been a member of the Accademia degli Animosi. "Within the educational College at Brerarun by the Jesuit Fathers and attended by the highest nobilitytwo Academies were established during the final years of the sixteenth century: one known as the Partenia Maggiore (or Academy of the Arisofi) and the other as the Partenia Minore (or Academy of the Animosi). In the former, students of Philosophy and Theology pursued their studies; in the latter, those of the Humanities and Eloquence." (trans. Maylender, p. 195). Maylender goes on to note that the present work is the earliest example of the Accademia's activities in print that he is aware of (p. 196). Here we find epigrams, odes, and a lengthy oratio, each signed by a different Accademician classmate; the theme is of course the glory of the Borromeos, with engraved portraits of Giberto's illustrious ancestors dating back to Saint Justina herself. The striking title-page features a portrait of the 18-year old Giberto as well as an elephant, Charles Borromeo's motto 'humilitas', figures of Philosophia and Prudentia; the imprese of the Accademia ("dant animos vices"), a camel, a unicorn, and a central vignette of the Rocca Borromeo in Angera (Borromeo Castle, on the shores of Lago Maggiore) surrounded by sirens. OCLC records only a later production celebrating Giberto's degree at Pavia (ca. 1636-7) bearing the same title, but with 26 ff (ICCU RMLE\045134, 3 copies in 2 locations). The present work is unrecorded in OCLC, but the ICCU shows a single copy, at the Biblioteca Trivulziana.
