Soft cover. Condition: New. The Almond Flowers and Other Stories, a collection of thirteen short stories by Anil Gharai in translation, highlights the experiences of marginalisation and oppression of communities at the periphery of our society. Set in coastal Bengal, Odisha and the forest kingdom of southwest Bengal, Anil Gharai's fiction provides an authentic documentation of Dalit voices from the eastern part of the nation. Exploring themes of injustice, destitution, resilience, and the desire for love and for revenge, these stories centre on the lives of the most disempowered and vulnerable, and give a voice to a hitherto invisible section of society. In these poignant stories, we meet a Banjara girl who refuses to accept the sexual abuse of the women of her community by the police; a poor midwife faced with an opportunity to avenge her husband's murder by an upper-class landowner; an outcast leper who finds himself shunned at his rich son's wedding; and in the titular story, an old, decrepit father who, in his struggle to earn a livelihood, unknowingly brings home danger that ruins his young daughter's hope for a better life. A visceral portrayal of the experiences of being a Dalit, these stories question the development paradigm by focusing on the heart of underdevelopment. Translated by Anuradha Sen and Arun Pramanik and edited by Indranil Acharya, this collection offers a breadth of vision reminiscent of the works of Mahasweta Devi.…

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This contributed volume is focused on SDG 3, 6, 7 ,9, 11, 15, and it covers extensive knowledge on damage and loss contexts of climate change in a developing country. Indias vast landscape with its diversity of eco-geo-physiography, socio-cultural, and developmental settings, coupled with climate change and anthropogenic factors, makes it one of the most disaster-prone countries of the world and, thus, representing almost all the disasters and extreme events associated with climate change, variability, and weather phenomenon.Besides common hazards, such as heavy rainfall, floods, drought, cyclone and heat wave, secondary and composite disasters like forest fires and disease epidemics are also covered with case studies and examples. Cross-cutting aspects like infrastructure resilience, gender and social equity concerns, legal and assessment tools, and futuristic vision have been covered well in the book. Disaster risk reduction, preparedness, and resilienceas central themes of adaptation to climate change are presented through policy discussions, tools, and strategic analysis of past and recent lessons. This book is of common interest to a wider range of readers across policyplanning, academia, research, and professional practitioners having interest in adaptation, resilience building and sustainability in developing countries of the world. Though it is primarily a reference book, it can also serve as a textbook for university courses and professional trainings in climate change adaptation, disaster management, sustainability and strategic management studies.
