Napoleon was busy with Spain, almost the last victim on his list. Spain was resisting. In London, people were alarmed and uneasy and crying out for a British offensive. Now, if ever, they declared, was the time to attack??to strike,? as one Londoner put it, ?a bold stroke for the rescue of the world.? Foreign Secretary Canning made the decision. The bold stroke was planned. Arms and supplies were poured into the Peninsula and an expeditionary force prepared. Such was the look of things when, in a London most unhappy about the war, about our too frequent withdrawals, our inability to do anything in time, but a London living an almost normal civilian life under a peaceful sky, the famous picture book of the capital was published. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Volume II only. Half leather marbled boards. Leather binding starting to split along front hinge. Engraved title page, this volume pp 99-202 with engraved plates with two views to each tissue protected page. Marbled end papers, small water stain to the margin of the last six pages of plates. Four raised bands to black spine strip with gilt decoration, red label with gilt decoration and lettering to front board.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Displayed in a series of two hundred picturesque views, from original drawings, taken under the direction of A. Pugin, Esq. the engravings executed under the superintendence of Mr. C. Heath with topographical and historical descriptions. In two volumes. Volume one only. Moderate wear and tear to leather covers, scuffing, shelf wear, some exposed boards at head and tail of spine and corners. Nice decorative embossing around perimeter of front and back covers, gilt decorations on spine. Marbled endpapers. Title page tearing away for approx. bottom quarter of page, but still well attached. Tear at top of half title as well, not interfering with title text. Binding is sound. Pages have age spots throughout but overall in good condition for its age. Text in both English and French.

Leather heavily rubbed, scuffed and chipped, bumped corners, boards rubbed, mottled with some staining, prelims and first page detached but extant, title page has loss which has been repaired, front hinge heavily cracked, however, apart from foxing and browning throughout, pages are good. Print. Condition: Good overall. First printing. The Royal Cockpit, or cock fight, Birdcage Walk, St James, color lithograph from 'Ackermann's Repository of Arts'. Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) was an English artist and caricaturist; Augustus Charles Pugin(1762-1832) was a French English artist who collaborated with Rowlandson often on illustrations for Ackermann's works. Light general toning over image, margins marked including spot on title. 10 1/4 x 8 1/2".
