3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Very good. In the previous year Yonge had published her historical novel 'Journal of Lady Beatrix Graham', based on the life of the sister of the Great Montrose, and Stuart would appear to open with a jocular reference to this character, rather than to her ancestor the living nine-year-old Lady Beatrice Gra…ham (1863-1932), when he asks Yonge 'to inform Lady Beatrix that if she cares to see a Letter of the Great Marquis recently brought to light among Lord Rollo's papers, she will find a copy of it in the third Report of the Historical MSS Commission just issued - and where a good deal of other curious correspondence is noticed. He explains how to get a copy of the report, adding that the historian Mark Napier has just been with him, 'and is so anxious to see the Letter of Montrose & others of Dundee that he wd. not wait for his own copy of the Report but has carried off mine.' He concludes by describing himself as 'one who has derived so much advantage' from Yonge's writing. At the head of the reverse of the last leaf there is a note, presumably from Yonge to Lady Beatrix, reading 'You will like to see this'.

According to Delane's entry in the Oxford DNB, he settled 'from about 1847 at 16 Serjeants' Inn, Temple'. The addressee appears to be 'W. Forsyth Esq', and is named in the letter as a brother of the Conservative politician William Forsyth (1812-1899), who took silk in 1857, and hence also of the diplomat Sir Thomas Douglas Forsy…th (1827-1886), both of whom have ODNB entries. 2pp, 12mo, with mourning border. In good condition, lightly aged, and folded twice for postage, in the neat remains of a windowpane mount. Begins: 'Dear Sir, / I have the pleasure of being known to your brother, the Queen's Counsell; but probably the enclosed note from Lord Clarendon will be my best introduction. / As you will see, Lord Clarendon promises for you that you will have the goodness to call upon me.' He continues by describing the most convenient time for Forsyth to visit, assuming that Clarendon 'has not drawn too heavy a bill upon your kindness'. George William Frederick Villiers (1800-1870), 4th Earl of Clarendon, was foreign secretary under three Liberal prime ministers.

A total of 8 pp, 4to, all on Palace Court letterheads. Dent's notes both signed 'Jock Dent.', and the copies both signed 'James Agate'. Two important, energetic and vivid letters by Agate, totalling 6 pp, 4to, defending Coward's play and his position on 'the intellectual and the popular', against the 'pseudo-intelligentsia' of t…he barristers Shearman and 'Jack' St John Hutchinson (1884-1942). As Item Two states below, Agate has instructed Dent to send the copies to Gye as he was present at his 'talk' with Shearman on 4 November, and because of Shearman's respect for his 'opinion in all matters of taste'. Good, on aged paper. ONE: Dent to Gye, 5 November 1931. 1 p, 4to. 'Mr. Agate has asked me to forward to you this copy of a letter which he has just posted to Mr. Shearman.' TWO: Copy of Agate to Shearman, 5 November 1931. 2 pp, 4to. Headed 'FINAL MANIFESTO'. Begins 'I may as well out with the whole truth, which is this. | The gravamen of my charge against the class which you and Hutchinson represent is that it does not go to those things which are really highbrow. [.] it is absurd to argue that any art of drama can exist for, say six people. [.] That class if it really supported the theatre would have kept "Hamlet" on at the Queen's, and made it possible for Huxley's "World of Light" to run more than three weeks to empty houses. It would have flocked to see "The Venetian" and Jean Forbes-Robertson's Hedda Gabler.' Complains that he has 'stood up for these plays in print and in front of the microphone', and that there is 'no case of any first-class intellectual play' which he has 'condemned or neglected or failed to encourage. Now comes a popular play which I assess according to its merits as a popular entertainment, and Hutchy's lot have the impertinence to condemn this play on the plea that it does not belong to the intellectual drama which actually they do not support'. 'The Hutchy lot had it in their power to save the Phoenix Society [.] They took no interest, never went near it, and allowed it to die. [.] Yet you run down "Cavalcade" because you judge it by the standard of "Socrates" [by Clifford Bax], though the play which Hutchy actually professed to prefer was "Hamlet"! [.] I try to appraise the intellectual and the popular each in its class, [.] You told me the other day that you had the greatest respect for Ernest Gye's opinion in all matters of taste, and as he heard our talk last night I am sending him a copy of this'. References to John Gielgud, 'Jean Forbes-Robertson's Hilda Wangel', 'The Miracle', Duff Cooper, the Stage Society. THREE: Dent to Gye, 6 November 1931. 1 p, 4to. 'I enclose another copy of another letter in the Cavalcade Controversy.' FOUR: Copy of Agate to Shearman, 6 November 1931. 4 pp, 4to. With three minor emendations in Agate's autograph. 'This is the Late Night Final and positive last. [.] I do not like that class which, having the means, lets the Phoenix die, ignores Dekker at the Old Vic because it isn't fashionable, frequents the opera in May but will not keep it going at any other time, ignores Jean as Hedda, affects good plays only when its pets are performing, and has failed to make possible the existence in London of an intellectual theatre. The fact that you individually have taken Tim Dawes to one or two plays does not alter the fact that the class as a whole has failed in its responsibility.' 'The kind of play that this class professes to want in place of "Cavalcade" [.] would reduce Drury Lane to bankruptcy.' Gives reason why he and Ivor Brown uphold Coward's play. Quotes 'Hutchy's letter'. 'I do not lay claim to Hutchy's intellect. But I challenge him as a super-intelligent playgower to produce one single instance of any first-class work in the theatre of the last ten years which I have failed to acclaim, except Pirandello's "Henry IV" which I regarded as charlatanism and gave my reasons.' Again defends Cavalcade and his endorsement of it. 'Have you now got the point which is my obj.

The influential potter Herbert Minton (1793-1858), of the Staffordshire firm Thomas Minton and Sons, had died on 1 April 1858. A couple of months later, on 26 May 1858, Wyatt read before the Society of Arts his paper 'On the Influence exercised on Ceramic Manufactures by the late Mr. Herbert Minton'. The first four letters carry… the stamp of the Society of Arts. All five items in good condition, lightly aged. The first two 1p., 12mo; the third 2pp., 12mo. The fourt 3pp., 12mo. The fifth 1p, landscape 12mo. ONE ('Saty'): Reads: 'I have selected at Phillip's (Chamberlaine's) in Bond St. beautiful [last word underlined] things of Minton's which he will send on Wednesday morning Space should be reserved for these about 12 feet by six of table.' (In 1823 H. and R. Chamberlain, 'Worcester China manufacturers', were at 55 New Bond Street. In around 1858 the firm were taken over by W. P. & G. Phillips, retailers of china and glass ware (established 1760), whose main premises were in Oxford Street.) TWO (27 May 1858): Regarding the proofs of the printed version of the paper, and his desire 'to have fifty copies for myself stitched in wrappers'. THREE (19 June 1858): Acknowledging receipt of Foster's 'note conveying an intimation that the Council of the Society of Arts will be pleased to see me on the occasion of the Annual dinner on the 24th.', and expressing regret that he will be unable to comply. FOUR (5 December 1863): On his return to town he writes that he will do his best 'to decide if you wish it with Mr Redgrave and Mr Webb the merits of your Competing Art Workmen'. He knows of nothing to prevent him from 'attending any meeting you may summons for the mornings of next Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday'. He adds: 'I say mornings because I see that colour is involved in one or two of the Subjects and one can scarcely reckon upon good light in the afternoon.' FIVE (15 October 1871): Headed 'Mem[orandum] -' and addressed to 'Dear Delamotte'. He is sending him '(by bookpost) the paper on Mosaic. I knew I had one or two printed separately but until today could not find one.'.

François and Albert also began their careers as a couple. When Louis died in 1909, he left a family without a supporter and Paul without a partner. To solve both problems, the remaining brothers formed a single trio act: François retained his traditional role as the elegant, pompous, white-faced clown; Albert, as the hapless and disastrous Augusto, designed a grotesque new makeup of high black eyebrows, an exaggerated mouth, and a bulging red nose (a makeup style that has influenced countless later clowns); and Paul joined the trio with a new character, the notary, with minimal makeup and a comic style midway between his brothers'. The Fratellini toured Europe and Russia before joining the Cirque Medrano in Paris during World War I. By 1923, they had Paris at their mercy and were admired not only by the general public but also by intellectuals such as the screenwriters Raymond Radiguet and Jean Cocteau, who created characters based on the Fratellini in their plays. Many of the Fratellini children also became circus performers, including Victor (1901-1979), Paul's son, and Paul's daughter, Annie (born in 1932), who continued the family tradition as great clowns in France. Albert's memoirs, "Nous Les Fratellini," were published in 1955.Albert Fratellini (1886-1961) was born in Moscow to the Fratellini circus family. He and his brothers, Paul and François, trained in Russia under one of the Durov brothers. The Fratellini Brothers' entrance lasted 45 minutes. They performed at the Cirque Medrano, where they developed many routines now considered classics. A frequent visitor to the Fratellini dressing room was Pablo Picasso. Albert Fratellini was described as a "superb comic actor." He is considered the father of the American Augustus as we understand it today. His makeup style influenced many famous Augustus, most notably Louis Jacobs. His performances were extravagant and crazy. The Fratellini received honors from the President of France during their run at the Cirque Medrano, and Albert was one of the most famous clowns in French history.

See the appreciative entry on Buckstone by Donald Roy in the Dictionary of National Biography. Interesting and informative letters, shedding vivid light on the day-to-day workings of early-Victorian theatre, written by a leading London actor-manager and dramatist and sent to a provincial actor-manager, regarding the arrangement…of engagements, benefits, and plays. Of particular interest is the fourth letter, which refers to Mrs Fitzwilliam [Fanny [Frances Elizabeth] Fitzwilliam, née Copeland] (1801-1854), with whom Buckstone toured New Orleans and the South, c. 1840-1841. Five items. Total of 7pp, 4to. Each on a bifolium. Aged and worn, each with a central spike-hole, and all with traces of mount adhering along one edge. ONE: 20 August 1839; Theatre Royal, Haymarket. Reverse of second leaf with broken seal in red wax, postmark (King Street, Covent Garden), and address to 'M. H. Simpson Esq | Theatre Royal | Birmingham'. 1p. Presumably referring to a Birmingham benefit, he states that although there is no person he would 'rather endeavour to serve than Mr. Monro', 'Friday the 30th is unfortunately one of the days (or rather nights) on which "Single Life" is fixed to be acted and Mr. Webster [the actor Benjamin Nottingham Webster (1797-1882) lessee of the Haymarket] cannot give permission for my absence'. He even 'waited till to-day to see Mr. W & be certain of public arrangemen[t]'. He reports that 'We are doing greatly here, comedy nights and all', and ends in the hope that 'things are flourishing at Brummagem'. He ends with regards 'to Mr. Monro and Mrs. Simpson'. TWO: Undated [on paper with watermarked date 1839]; 'Theatre Royal Liverpoo'l. 2pp. Closely written. He begins by explaining that Webster 'brings out a new play of Bulwers on Wednesday in which I am not concerned', and that 'there is not the shadow of a doubt that he will refuse me further leave of absence'. He 'would rather play for [Simpson's] benefit on Friday the 22nd. which I have no doubt I shall be able to do'. He states that he will arrange with Simpson before he leaves Birmingham, adding: 'I enclose you books of the Melodrama of Peter Bell which I think would act well at Birmingham. It will require getting up, and can't be too soon put in hand if you can do it, we shall want a waggon and horses'. He enjoins him to 'read it attentively' and give his opinion of a detailed itinerary, for the purpose of Simpson making up playbills, for four days ending in 'Friday Benefit Mr Buckstones last new comedy of Single Life and Peter Bell (perhaps)'. The itinerary features two of Buckstone's plays premiered in London in 1838 and 1839: 'The Duchess de la Vaubaliere - I think I called it The Dukes Bride" - you can refer to the bills and ascertain and "Weak Points"'. Also 'for this night only "The Lottery Ticket"'. He continues: 'What do you say to this arrangement? - I shall write positively on Wednesday but I am so sure of being able to be with you that you may be getting the Duchess and Peter Bell ready.' Postscript: 'My part in Peter Bell will be "Martin" The Tinker'. THREE: 29 April [1840]; 'T[heatre]. R[oyal]., Adelphi'. 1p. Addressed, with broken seal in red wax and 1840 postmark, to 'M. H. Simpson | Theatre Royal | Birmingham'. The letter begins: 'Mr. Yates has only this morning decided that he will close on Wedy the 6th. May on Saty. the 9th. at the latest in which case I can act with you, if the time will agree with your arrangements, or Monday the 11th. May for 5 nights or commence Monday the 18th.' He gives a preference, explaining that he is 'in treaty with another Theatre for the 18th. or thereabouts'. If his suggested date is agreeable, he will send 'the Manuscript of "Poor Jack" [premiered at the Adelphi, 3 February 1840] and arrange my pieces for the week.' Simpson writes on the cover: 'Engaged for the 11th of May 1840 | M. H. Simpson | terms as before'. FOUR: 29 November 1842; 'T[heatre]. R[oyal]. Haymarket. 2pp. 4to. On bifolium with ANS by Sim.
