Dek. förlagsband i fint skick. Stockholm, Nationalmuseum, 1997. 8:o. 120 sid. - - - Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, of the two contemporary architects William Chambers and Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz. Illustrated. In Swedish, foreword also in English. Publisher's pictorial boards, very fine.

Contemporary full leather binding in Fair/Good condition. Boards well worn and soiled due to age. Spine divided into six sections with upper section missing. Hinges fragile with internal cracking, but holding. Last few pages loose. Contents Good. The title page has details of previous owners neatly written in ink as follows - 'Cadwaladr LLoyd his book 1773' 'Thomas Lloyd's book' 'Thomas Lloyd Glan Twrch berchenog y llyf hwn March 30 1922' To inside the back boards is written in ink - ' Robert Roberts Cwmtylo iw gwir berchenog y llyfr hwn'. This is a Welsh language Concordance to the Welsh Bible largely based on a smaller work by Abel Morgan published in 1730 at Philadelphia, USA. Peter Williams was a prominent leader of Welsh methodism in the eighteenth century, best known for publishing Welsh-language bibles and bible commentary. He was born near Laugharne, Carmarthenshire. Whilst a student at Carmarthen Grammar School in 1743 he was converted to methodism after hearing a sermon by George Whitefield. He was ordained a deacon in 1745. He was refused ordination as a priest due to his methodist beliefs and became associated with water Street Chapel Carmarthen. He joined the Methodists in 1747 and began to tour the country preaching. He began to publish copies of Welsh language bibles at an affordable price. The first edition was published in 1770. He produced commentaries on biblical chapters. However, his commentary on John1 led to suggestions that he sypathized with Sabellianism. In 1791 the matter came to head at a methodist Association at Llandeilo and Williams was expelled. he died at Llandyfaelog on the 8th August 1796.

Catalogo unico, IT\ICCU\MODE\018707; Melzi, Opere Anonime, vol. II, p.440, vol. III, p. 413; F. Venturi, Settecento Riformatore, vol. II, p. 125. Book.

Volume 2: Cahiers 6-10: 113 plates. Volume 3: Cahiers 11-15: 111 plates. Volume 4: Cahiers 16-21: 139 plates. 491 plates total with 30 pp. of text as in Royet. On both blue and white laid paper, varying throughout. Contemporary calf, covers bordered in blind, flat spine divided into six gilt compartments, red Morocco lettering piece in the second, volume number in the fifth, in two clamshell boxes backed in brown Morocco with gilt lettering and felt interiors with felt-lined dividers Provenance: Didier Wirth, founder of the European Institute of Gardens and Landscapes An exceptionally rare complete set of Le Rouge's monumental work on garden design and decoration: "The most important engraved work concerning the history of European gardens during the 18th century." (Korzus) Le Rouge's Jardins Anglo-Chinois series, published over fourteen years, is a treasure of "jardinomania," the fervent enthusiasm for Chinese gardens that swept Europe in the eighteenth century. It is the defining printed work of the era on the history of European gardens and the influence of the Anglo-Chinese aesthetic. An all-encompassing panorama that depicts flowerbeds, labyrinths, temples, man-made lakes, amphitheaters, pavilions, ruins, waterfalls, bridges, and aviaries, among other features, Les Jardins Anglo-Chinois includes French gardens such as Versailles and Roissy; English gardens such as Kew and Chiswick; German gardens such as Bagno Park and Würzburg; and most famously, Cahiers 14-17's 99 plates are dedicated to the gardens of the Emperor of China, including the famous Beijing garden the Yuanming Yuan that was destroyed in 1860. While collations of the book's plates differ, and can be seen as variously calling 491, 492, and 493 plates as complete, we believe the count stipulated by Royet's masterful bibliography to be correct, which is 491 as seen on pages 78 and 273. Every plate in Royet is contained in this copy. The thirty-page essay by the Swedish architect William Chambers, which was published in Cahier 5, is here bound-in preceding Cahier 1. The map of Potsdam published in Cahier 3 is here bound-in after Cahier 1 and before Cahier 2. Le Rouge was a famous cartographer, engraver, publisher, and architect. Likely born in Hanover to the French architect Louis Rémy de la Fosse, Le Rouge began his career publishing maps of Darmstadt and Alsace, and while in the service of Maurice of Saxony, a large map of Holland. From 1736 he lived in Paris, where he obtained the position of Ingénieur-géographe du roi for King Louis XV and Louis XVI. Le Rouge began to publish Les Jardins Anglo-Chinois in 1775 and continued the project over a period of fourteen years, incorporating plans, views, and texts often adapted from earlier printed sources, and occasionally from original drawings. Of great import are the detailed plans of a number of gardens that have either disappeared completely or have been altered to the point where the designer's original intentions are no longer evident, such as the garden at Raincy, which now only exists on paper. Perhaps more significant, and typifying the 18th-century vogue for chinoiserie, are the 99 plates of the gardens and palaces of the Qianlong Emperor of China in Cahiers 14 to 17, which are particularly valuable and more carefully executed than the versions published by Chambers. All of these 99 plates were engraved after Chinese woodblock illustrations or paintings, including those dating from 1744 when the emperor commissioned an album of 40 scenes from the painters Shen Yuan and Tang Dai. The album was later copied and given to the Swedish Ambassador in France before serving as a model for Le Rouge. The art historian Bernard Korzus writes of Jardins Anglo-Chinois, "As a whole this publication contains the most complete collection of views of gardens of Anglo-Chinese or any other mode. These images document the history of gardening over an exceptionally long period, from the projects of George Loudon at the start of the 18th century for the alterations to Wanstead, to the gardens of Monceau and Ermenonville." Complete copies of Jardins Anglo-Chinois are of the utmost rarity; the present copy is the most complete available in years. The census of institutional copies, complete and incomplete, in the United States and Europe that is included in Royet's masterly bibliography notes only 25 known copies. Of these, we could locate only nine complete copies, with sixteen incomplete. Berlin Katalog, 1613. Inventaire du fonds français, Graveurs du XVIIIe siècle XV, 56-72. Ganay, 99. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Folio (21 2/8 x 14 4/8 inches). Letterpress title-page, dedication to the Prince of Wales, 2-page list of subscribers, preface and 23 pages of text. 21 engraved plates of Chinese designs by Fougeron, Foudrinier and others. Modern half brown morocco, marbled paper boards, gilt. First edition, on heavy paper, the plates with strong impressions. William Chambers was a Scottish Architect, born in Gothenburg in Sweden, where his father was a merchant. From 1744-49 he worked for the Swedish East India Company travelling extensively in China. Fascinated by the architecture he saw he returned to Europe, studying architecture with Blondel in Paris, and setting up his own architectural practice in London in 1755. His work with Lord Bute and other members of the Royal Circle established him as a one of the foremost architects of his day. "Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture, Dresses, Machines, and Utensils" was "the first time Chinese architecture was presented as a subject worthy of the kind of serious study formerly reserved for Western antiquity. One of the handsomest architectural folios of the century, among its 164 subscribers were many of the milordi he had met in Italy. Nevertheless, its influence in Britain was less than Chambers might have hoped. The high fashion for Chinoiserie architecture in England was in the 1740s, a mongrel style made up from diverse ornamental sources. It lacked the authority of first-hand study. Oddly, Chambers himself at Amesbury, Wiltshire; Kew Gardens, Surrey; The Hoo, Hertfordshire; Blackheath, Kent; and perhaps Ingress Abbey, Kent, never used the authoritative detail of the very Designs he had published, except for his unexecuted design for a bridge for Frederick II at Sanssouci, Germany (1763). He may well have sensed that the Chinese architecture he had studied at first hand was an alien style in the Europe of rococo and early neo-classicism. Only after Chambers's death did the book come into its own in England as a model for Chinese decoration (for example at the Brighton Pavilion, 1815). However, on the continent circumstances were different, particularly in Germany and France, where the fashion did not reach a peak until the 1780s. There the book's plates had a profound effect throughout the century, particularly on garden architecture and interior decoration, for example at Drottningholm China House, Sweden (1760s), and Schloss Worlitz, Germany (1770s-1780s)" (John Harris for DNB). Quarter Leather. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Folio (59 x 86 cm.): title from banner/scroll on "Tyrol gegen Suden" map; key sheet plus 20 sheets joined as four sections. Bound in contemporary quarter sheep over blue paste paper boards, leather label "Carte du Tyrol" and oval leather label with initials "M.G."; binding scuffed, especially spine, and a few wormholes. ORIGINAL EDITION OF ANICH AND HUEBER'S TYROL WALL-MAP, THE MOST ACCURATE TO DATE AND THE STANDARD WELL INTO THE 19TH CENTURY. Full engraved title: "Tyrolis sub felici regimine Mariae Theresiae Rom. Imper. Aug. chorographice delineate a Petro Anich et Blasio Hueber Colonis oberperfussianis curante Ignat. Weinhart Profess. Math. in Univers. Oenipontaria. Aeri incise a Ioa. Erneste Mansfeld, Viennae 1774." Ignaz Weinhart S.J., Austrian Jesuit and professor of mathematics and physics at the University of Innsbruck, was the brainchild behind the first geographic survey of the Tyrol. Weinhart acted as mentor and teacher to Peter Anich and Blasius Hueber, who served as the principal cartographers of the project; Johann Ernst Mansfeld was the engraver. Weinhart met Anich in 1751 and immediately recognized his surveying and cartographic talents. Anich and Heuber conducted their survey of the Tyrol over several years, from 1760 to 1774, with Weinhart supervising their activity. The fruit of their long collaborative efforts--the 20-part map of north and south Tyrol--was the first accurate land survey of the region and became the model for later surveying in the field of military geography. The son of the more famous Antoine-Joseph (1680-1765), avocat to the Parlement de Paris and secretary to the king, was a connoisseur of gardening who laid out two for himself and his family, before writing "La théorie et la pratique du jardinag" (published anonymously, 1709; second edition, 1713), based on his experience and his reading. Antoine-Nicolas had studied architecture under Le Blond, drawn under Bernard Picart and studied the rules and principles of painting under Roger de Piles.
