Paperback. Condition: Good. Arguing that American culture appeals to and is populated by children and adolescents who merely appear to be adult men and women, the essays in Perpetual Adolescence examine the Jungian archetype of the eternal youth--the puer aeternus--as it is manifested in the arrested development of American culture. From the infantilization of the American psyche and the lionization of teenaged celebrities and bodies, to fanatical conformity, and puerile entertainment, the contributors probe the various ways that American television, music, film, print, Internet, education, and social movements work to nourish and sustain this child archetype. Offering analytic psychology as an instrument of social analysis and critique, they point to the need for dialogue over the causes and effects of our puer-fixations, which have become, in large part, both a creation and a creator of the American zeitgeist.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Shakespeare's problem plays present an unusually fertile field for Jungian tillage. Like a face glimpsed in a crowd and then lost, these works seem to hint at truths just beyond our grasp. Viewed through the lens of Jung's theory of archetypes, pieces fall into place with remarkable clarity, each revolving around a specific critical axis that allows us to see the form and structure that elude us in other readings. The author argues that Jung's theories offer the best key to date for these most intriguing of literary and dramatic puzzles.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of Sally F. Porterfield's Jungian analysis of several Shakespeare plays, published in 1994 by Greenwood Press. 8vo, hardcover, 119 pages. Inscribed to Maria Irene Fornes on the FFE ("To Irene, with my deepest thanks, respect, and affection/Sally 8/28/97"). Porterfield (1932-2017) was a teacher, director, theater critic, and writer. She wrote a book about Maria Irene Fornes (Black Cats and Green Trees: The Art of Maria Irene Fornes) and directed the Fornes play Sarita at the University of Hartford. Fornes (1930-2018) was a Cuban-American playwright, theater director, and teacher whose work in off-Broadway and experimental theater, including her legendary workshops, influenced and inspired Sam Shepard, Paula Vogel, Lanford Wilson, and Edward Albee, along with several generations of aspiring playwrights. Vogel contended "In the work of every American playwright at the end of the 20th century, there are only two stages: before she has read Maria Irene Fornes and after." Slight lean to spine. Minor rubbing to extremities. Faint price sticker residue to rear board. Inscribed by Author(s).…
