En él, Bowers consolida y desarrolla los logros de la tradición inglesa, que tiene ya más de un siglo de antigüedad. Su libro constituye un acto de síntesis creativa, que establece un nuevo punto de partida. Aunque desde entonces ha habido mucha actividad en el ámbito de la bibliografía descriptiva, los Principios siguen siendo una referencia a la que acudir para todos los que se dedican al trabajo bibliográfico.
