Full sprinkled calf with pointille roulette borders to upper and lower boards, spine tooled gilt with arrows argent in ruled compartments, titling piece lettered gilt in 2nd compartment, five raised bands and outer and inner dentelles hatched…gilt. Small 4to (or more likely 8vo bound in signatures of 4). 6inches x 3.75 inches (15.5cms x 9.25cms). Half-title[1p], blank [1p], title [1p], blank [1p], pp[1]-324 (A1-Ss2). Collated and complete. A little rubbed, upper hinge has some cracking but binding chords are holding firm. Binding is otherwise very good. An old pencilled note to front pastedown, some browning to edges of endpapers, one small wormhole to last leaf of index. Text block and contents are else in very good, tight, clean condition. Gaius Sallustius Crispus, generally known simply as Sallust, (86-34 BC) was a Roman historian, born at Amiternum in the country of the Sabines. Throughout his career Sallust always stood by his principle as a popularis. He was an opposer of Pompey's party and the old aristocracy of Rome. The Works include his best known history 'The Conspiracy of Catiline'. A finely printed edition from the Foulis Press In partnership with his brother, Robert, Andrew Foulis published books in English, Latin, Greek, French and Italian that were noticeable for their quality. The brothers were sometimes referred to as "the Elzevirs of Britain".

Sallust is the earliest Roman historian from whom we have suriving writings. He would often include passages on morality and passages praising a government that included the voice of the people in his histories. Sallust's work would later influence both medieval monarchs and several figures in the American revolution. This is a large and attractively done edition. Near Very Good. Three of the four joints gently exposed but holding, the crown of volume one's spine rubbed away. Volume one's rear board somewhat bowed. The leaves are clean and bright.
