Each vol with the original printed dust-jackets, spines of which are somewhat dust-stained and chipped at heads. Half-titles and titlepages printed in red and black. Two frontispieces (as wanted) and a further two plates (in vol III). An clean and tight set in publisher's binding and jackets. Thomas Browne (1605-82) was an English polymath and writer in such divers fields as medicine, religion, science, and the esoteric. Browne's literary works are permeated with references to classical and biblical sources. Although he has been described as suffering from melancholy, his writings are also characterised by wit and subtle humour, while his literary style is varied, depending on the genre he uses, resulting in a rich and unique prose, which extends from notes to polished baroque eloquence. He was buried in the chancel of St Peter Mancroft, Norwich, whereat his skull was removed when his lead coffin was accidentally re-opened by workmen in 1840 (Wikipedia). Book.
