Son père était cordonnier et sa mère femme de ménage. Lorsqu'il était jeune, son père tomba malade et dû rester en hôpital. Savinien fut donc obligé de partir vivre à la campagne chez son grand-père. Par la suite, sa famille étant d'une très grande pauvreté, il quitta sa maison pour aller travailler comme ouvrier-cordonnier au sein d'une association. Ce fut là que Savinien se perfectionna dans l'art de la cordonnerie. Si la journée il travaillait beaucoup et consciencieusement, il profitait de son temps libre le soir pour lire de grands auteurs. Savinien Lapointe fut très inspiré par l'air de la campagne et de la nature qui baigna son enfance : jeune, il aimait déjà la poésie de la Nature. Lorsqu'il fut engagé comme ouvrier-cordonnier, il lut des auteurs comme le philosophe Rousseau, ou les chansons populaires qu'écrivait Béranger avec lequel se lia d'amitié.
