Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Used; Good. This 1972 edition of The Underachieving School by John Holt contains provocative and stimulating essays that examine a wide range of contemporary educational controversies. In his earlier works he concludes that most schools are jails and that, far from encouraging natural inclination to learn, they stifle all enthusiasm. Believing that learning must not be separated from living, he urges us to re-examine our attitudes and suggests that compulsory school attendance ought to be abolished, formal teaching cut to a minimum, and that children should choose what they want to learn and when they want to learn it. Title: The Underachieving School Author: John Holt Publisher: Pelican Books Publication Date: 1972 Format: Softcover Condition: This book is in good condition for its age other than some minor signs of wear, small inscription on endpaper, tanned pages.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The Underachieving School (1976) is John Holt doing what John Holt did best: looking at education with a calm, suspicious eye and asking whether the system designed to help children learn might, in fact, be doing something rather less helpful. This is classic Pelican territory: serious, compact, reform-minded, and faintly dangerous to anyone too comfortable with desks in rows. Holt was one of the great critics of conventional schooling, and here he worries away at the assumptions beneath school life: testing, obedience, boredom, failure, authority, and the curious institutional belief that children learn best when surrounded by bells, rules, and adults measuring them at regular intervals. The title is beautifully barbed. The Underachieving School sounds at first like a book about pupils not trying hard enough. Then Holt turns the spotlight neatly around and suggests the real underachiever may be the institution itself. Awkward. Very awkward. Especially for anyone holding a clipboard. There is something wonderfully 1970s Pelican about the whole thing: earnest, radical, intelligent, and convinced that society might be improved if people would stop pretending the existing arrangements were natural laws. It belongs to that honourable shelf of books that do not merely explain a subject, but quietly encourage the reader to become difficult at meetings. Condition: Good, which seems apt for a book about systems that survive criticism better than they deserve. A sharp and thoughtful read for teachers, parents, educational reformers, homeschoolers, former pupils with unresolved feelings about double maths, and anyone who has ever suspected that ?schooling? and ?learning? are not always the same thing.…
