hardcover. Condition: Very Good in Dustjacket. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. New York. 1960. Hillary House. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. Studies in Modern European Literature & Thought series. 126 pages. hardcover. keywords: Literary Criticism Russia Translated Literature. DESCRIPTION - This introduction to the works of Tolstoy is written by a scholar distinguished by meticulous scholarship, literary and philosophical perception, and above all common sense. Dr. Redpath has not only studied the novels and moral-religious writings of Tolstoy in the original, but has also at his command a thorough knowledge of the most recent literature produced about his subject in Russia. His double equipment as literary critic and student of philosophy enables Dr. Redpath to do justice to the quality of Tolstoy's imaginative creations as well as to the seriousness of his moral and religious preoccupations. The discussion, for instance, of Anna Karenina, based as it is on a comparative study of various drafts, shows the intimate struggle, fought in and through this work, between Tolstoy's imaginative sympathies and his moral convictions. - The student of Tolstoy will find the selective, but none the less rich, bibliography, and the note on some of the recent critical publications in Russian, particularly useful. inventory #13047.
