Book VII of Thucydides covers the final stages of the Sicilian Expedition, when Athens discovered that sending a large army and fleet hundreds of miles from home without a particularly sensible exit strategy might contain certain disadvantages. There are battles, reverses, desperate decisions, collapsing morale and an increasingly unpleasant realisation that the entire enterprise has gone very badly wrong. Thucydides remains one of the foundational historians of the Western tradition because he was interested not merely in what happened but in why people made the decisions they did. Book VI of Thucydides covers the planning and launch of the Sicilian Expedition during the Peloponnesian War, with all the political argument, ambition, persuasion, uncertainty and spectacularly questionable decision-making that came with it. Athens was already engaged in a major war with Sparta. Naturally, somebody suggested invading Sicily.
