Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Book Club Edition. A powerful regional novel of the American Midwest, The Thresher is Herbert Krause's acclaimed portrait of rural Minnesota wheat farmers during the twilight of the great horse-powered threshing era. Drawing upon his own upbringing on a Minnesota farm, Krause crafts a richly detailed story of family, faith, love, labor, and tradition as mechanization and modern life begin transforming the agricultural landscape. Praised upon publication by writers including Stephen Vincent Benét and Wallace Stegner, the novel remains one of the finest literary depictions of twentieth-century Midwestern farm life and is increasingly sought by collectors of regional American literature. This Book Club Edition presents very well despite a heavily worn dust jacket. The dark blue publisher's cloth is clean and attractive with bright gilt lettering and decorative wheat motif on the spine. Binding remains square and sound with no loose or detached pages. Interior is remarkably clean, free of writing, bookplates, or library markings, showing only light age toning typical of the period. The dedication page is present, and the copyright page confirms the 1946 publication while the dust jacket identifies this as a Book Club Edition. The original illustrated dust jacket is present but in Fair condition, retaining its attractive front panel artwork depicting a Midwestern threshing scene by illustrator Bill Lekse. The jacket exhibits substantial edge wear with numerous chips, tears, losses at the spine ends and corners, creasing, and old tape reinforcement visible on the verso. Despite its condition, the jacket remains complete enough to display. Herbert Krause (1905-1976) was an American novelist, playwright, and educator born on a farm near Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Raised amid the wheat fields and farming communities of the Upper Midwest, he drew heavily upon his firsthand experiences in his fiction. After graduating from St. Olaf College and earning graduate degrees from the University of Iowa, Krause taught English and creative writing for many years, eventually serving as head of the English Department at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Krause became nationally recognized for his authentic portrayals of Midwestern rural life. His first novel, Wind Without Rain (1939), won the Friends of American Writers Award, while The Thresher (1946) is widely regarded as his finest achievement. The novel has earned enduring praise for its realistic depiction of farming communities, their religious traditions, and the profound social changes brought about by modernization, securing Krause's reputation as one of the foremost literary voices of the American Great Plains.
