Shirley, Eatington Park, Warwickshire, with accompanying ownership inscription "E. J. Shirley no. 6." Cambridge University Library records this style of bookplate as probably belonging to Evelyn John Shirley of Ettington Park, Member of Parliament for County Monaghan and Warwickshire South. This provenance places the book within the Shirley family's distinguished English country-house library tradition and adds appeal for collectors of bookplates, aristocratic provenance, English education, early science, and the history of knowledge. An armorial bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown, accompanied by a contemporary ownership inscription. Despite its age and wear, the text remains highly presentable and the volume retains significant historical appeal. This work was intended as an introduction to the traditional Seven Liberal Arts, encompassing subjects such as grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. Educational texts of this type were foundational to eighteenth-century learning and provide insight into the intellectual formation of students, scholars, and members of the British gentry. Such works represent an important stage in the development of educational theory and the transmission of classical knowledge during the Enlightenment period. Of particular interest is the armorial bookplate of Evelyn John Shirley (1788-1856) of Eatington Park, Warwickshire, accompanied by an early ownership inscription reading "E. J. Shirley." Shirley was a Member of Parliament, antiquarian, and member of the distinguished Shirley family whose library at Eatington Park was one of the notable country-house collections of nineteenth-century England. This provenance firmly places the volume within an identifiable aristocratic library and enhances its appeal to collectors of provenance, English country-house libraries, genealogy, and the history of education.
