Leather Bound. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Small Octavo. 408 pages. The binding measures 8 inches tall by 5 3/8 inches wide. Hardcover bound in black quarter leather with brown cloth-covered boards. The binding is rubbed and bumped with scuffing to the leather spine and the boards. Spine ends especially rubbed. The cloth boards show heavy pale spotting. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. The second front flyleaf has an inscription reading "Ernest P. Bennett / Fort Scott, Kansas". (We have three of these posted this week; the Fourth and Fifth Readers have the name of "Baby Bennett / Fort Scott, Kansas"). The text of this book is a little toned with some sporadic foxing. Illustrated with a number of nice text engravings. These books were published at a time when children were expected to read actual literature and scenes from history, including events from American History. Some of the numerous authors include Harriet Beecher Stowe, Daniel Webster, Washington Irving, Henry Clay, Edward Everett, Walter Scott, Edmund Burke, Leigh Hunt, James Fenimore Cooper, Byron, Longfellow, Tennyson, Whittier, Emerson, Shelley, Milton, Shakespeare and others.
