(endpaper maps) Using the same technique (of weaving a complicated narrative from the intersecting "real" lives of various film characters), critic/novelist Thomson here does the same thing for the American West that he did for 1940s America in his previous novel "Suspects." Where that novel was dark and pinched and obsessive (like a good film noir), this one is ambitious and expansive and elegaic (like a good Western).
