First edition thus, with preface dated 1820. 8vo, contemporary boards, rebacked some time ago and front hinge recently professionally refurbished. Spine with six compartments and two labels, nicely detailed, although in a somewhat later style. Bookplate of the eminent collector Boies Penrose II on the front pastedown and second bookplate of George & Laura Gifford on the front free endpaper. Rectangular rules around edges of boards, all edges marbled with matching marbled endpapers, edges of boards with fine minute marquetry-like decoration. Two early bookseller's labels on front pastedown endpaper, first one (presumably) from Matthews & Co., Bradford, and second one from Willis & Sotheran, London. The recent book "The Art of Thomas Bewick" by Diana Donald launched a reevaluation of Bewick, seeing him as an innovator within the framework of the age of invention. The book was reviewed in The New York Review of Books under the heading "England's Great Neglected Artist" in October, 2015.…

With frontispiece portrait of Thomas Bewick, 4 portraits of Bewick by different engravers, and numerous engravings to illustrate the Fables. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands to the spine and marbled boards. Page edges lightly marbled. The binding has wear to corners and the top and bottom of the spine but is in very good clean condition. There are some faded areas to the foredge marbling. The original endpapers are present. The preliminaries and the frontispiece are very spotty, and the frontispiece has a small repaired section in the gutter. Octavo. xl, 332pp. In his comprehensive bibliography of Thomas Bewick's work, Nigel Tattersfield describes the compilation and publication of the Bewick illustrations as an effort in reverent conservation on the one hand, and savvy recycling on the other. Emerson Charnley had rescued various of Bewick's blocks originally cut for 18th-century projects, and had acquired still others from less-interested pressmen. Charnley then cleaned Bewick out of his remaining copies of the 1818 Fables of Aesop and pitched these 1820 Select Fables as simultaneously a companion volume and general retrospective of Bewickiana. The resulting production is in some ways a hodge-podge of illustrations, some better assigned than others. Nevertheless, it is among the most representative of secondary works to treat the Bewicks. Bound in green straight-grain morocco with rolls and stamps to cover in blind and rules in gilt. Spine in five compartments with gilt titling and heavy gilt florals. The double fore-edge here suits the Bewick material, with each of the six miniatures showing pastoral scenes presented as if captured from a larger narrative. The work is identifiable as that of the "Thistle Painter" thanks to a range of stylistic tropes - as in setting each miniature within an oval - as well as the conspicuous tells couched in the titles penciled at the front flyleaf. These include the use of the word "foredge" and references to each direction as "1st side" and "reverse." Miniatures show: The Dog and the Shadow, The Lion and the Ass, The Crow and the Pitcher, The Snipe Shooter, The Stag Looking into the Water, and Fhe Fox and the Countryman. Fore-edge nearly pristine, binding with rubs along edges and light bumps to corners, foxing to frontispiece portrait of Thomas Bewick. Overall a vg+ example. Housed in slipcase. This is a publication in which, as the publisher candidly confesses in the preface, 'Mr. Bewick has no concern, or interest whatever', because it consisted of blocks bought up by the Newcastle bookseller Emerson Charnley which he then used without Bewick's consent. Tattersfield tells the story of this edition at some length (II pp. 622-5), and distinguishes it from a later reprint by Henry Bohn (undated, but c. 1850) which does not have Hodgson's colophon at the very end of the volume. Although all the wood-engravings are by the Bewicks (except the frontispiece portrait of Thomas, which is by Charlton Nesbit), the contents are a mixture of blocks made for various publications. Superb full bottle-green levant morocco bound by Riviere, with five raised bands, gilt titles to spine, heavy gilt foliate decoration to compartments, and triple gilt-ruled border to boards with embellished corners and central gilt floral cartouche. All edges gilt; marbled endpapers and gilt dentelles. Boards very slightly scuffed. Armorial bookplates of Lord Battersea and the Duke of Gloucester, to front paste-down and ffep respectively. Scattered light foxing, mainly to endpapers, otherwise contents are crisp. A handsome copy in excellent condition. Companion volume to Fables of Aesop, produced by Emerson Charnley from blocks he purchased from Thomas Wilson of York, with no input from the engraver. "Mr Bewick has no concern or interest whatever in the work submitted by the public" and though he accepted a copy for his own library following some acrimonious correspondence, the work was far from satisfactory to Bewick himself. This is an outstanding copy in a superb binding, with the added provenance of being from the library of Prince Henry of Gloucester. Prince Henry (1900-1974) was the third son of King George V and Queen Mary, and the younger brother of Kings Edward VIII and George VI.
