This is the first edition, Smith Elder issue, 1st state, without the author's preface. It includes many excellent sketches that were not included in Scott. The Australian geologist T. Griffith Taylor was a student of Prof. T. W. Edgeworth David, who accompanied Shackleton to the Antarctic in 1907-9. He joined Scott's Terra Nova expedition (1910-13). "He had devices and notebooks hanging out of every pocket and a passion for being well equipped. He was enraptured with geology." His text was didactic, with substantial information for students of geology and glaciology. As such, it was more difficult to read, and less popular than other accounts. Later issues included the preface, which was inadvertently omitted from the first run of copies printed. Royal 8vo, (xiv) 464 pp, 44 pp ills. & fold. map, ills and maps in text.
