Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. A seminal 19th-century work that highlights the injustices of the US merchant and naval fleet regarding the lack of native-born sailors, this book provides an astute glimpse into the landscape of the maritime profession at a time when the United States was on the rise as a powerful sea nation. The author draws on meticulous research, including interviews with naval officers and merchant captains, to expose the shockingly low ratio of Americans in the profession, at a mere one-quarter of total personnel. The book argues that this shortage not only weakens the nation's security, but also exploits foreign sailors, who are often taken advantage of by corrupt practices, low pay, and dangerous working conditions. The author posits that a strong naval presence is vital to the nation's security and economic prosperity, and asserts that the best way to achieve this is by creating a system that encourages and trains native-born Americans as sailors. This book remains relevant today, as the themes of national security, economic empowerment, and the plight of marginalized workers continue to resonate in contemporary society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Second edition, 8vo, pp. 32; original pink printed wrappers faded, slightly chipped and partially separated. To alleviate the shortage of able-bodied seamen, the author promotes his work as a "missionary" in the Office of the Marine Mission At Large, where applications were accepted from young men seeking employment, and the applications matched with vessels seeking crew. NUC locates only the LC copy of the first edition of the same year. OCLC locates the Harvard, AAS, Peabody Essex, Princeton Theological, and Library Company copies only. Sabin 93547.…

FIRST EDITION, occasional slight browning, pp. vi, v [-viii], 121, 8vo, contemporary marbled boards, rebacked, engraved armorial bookplate of the Duke of Buccleugh. We believe the author to have been he who raised the 99th Regiment of Foot in 1794. The subject would have been of interest to Buccleugh (family name, or one of them, Douglas), who raised a Fencible regiment in 1778. The printing is unclear in places, and the text has been corrected in MS, in one case a correction that must be authorial. 'The common people of these kingdoms, generally earn by their labor [sic], from 15 pence to half a crown per day: they are too knowing, when in their sober senses, to be induced to resign these profits arising from industry, merely for the pleasure, as they say, of wearing a red coat, and standing to be shot at for 5d a day.'
