Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life and legacy of a prominent figure within the Quaker community during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born into a devout Quaker family in York, England, the book's subject was deeply influenced by his family's unwavering commitment to their faith and their dedication to social reform. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a transformative era for the Society of Friends. The author meticulously traces the subject's formative years, highlighting the pivotal role of his parents and grandparents in shaping his character and worldview. Their emphasis on education, simplicity, and a deep personal connection with God laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to service and philanthropy. As the story progresses, the book explores the subject's contributions to various social causes, most notably his involvement in the establishment and management of a pioneering institution for the humane treatment of individuals with mental illness. His dedication to this endeavour, along with his active participation in the anti-slavery movement and other reform efforts, exemplify the Quaker values of compassion, equality, and social justice. Through meticulous research and insightful analysis, the author paints a vivid portrait of a man whose life and work left an indelible mark on his community and beyond. The book offers a compelling testament to the transformative power of faith, family, and a dedication to improving the lives of others. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Dark Green Cloth. Condition: Good+. 1st Thus. f/piece with tissue guard (sepia Tuke portrait)+t.tp. ('S', 'T' & 'London' in red)+x+283+(1, publisher's notice of two further titles), 7 further plates ex-pagination all with tissue guards; front blank fly has 1909-dated presentation inscription to 'Friends' Library Tunbridge Wells' above their early stamp, incipient gutter-opening between this leaf and preceding endpaper, but no immediate problem, end gutters good, light partial tanning to endpapers, front fly and verso final leaf (pub.noice), occ. brown flecking/foxing elsewhere, notably to tissue guards, otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked; covers clean, minimally worn and bright for age but fairly large, but faint, round lib.label ghost towards bottom. An interesting text from several angles (based on a larger 2 vol.1860 collection for family use), touches on his grandfather William's famous 'The Retreat' asylum in York, with which Samuel continued to be involved, numerous early 19th century political issues and events, as well as Tuke family history itself. The fly leaf inscription rather adds character than detracts in my view. Apparently scarce in UK. Note: quoted shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range. Size: 12.5 Cm x 19 .00 Cm.
