An ex-library copy with marking to the spine, endpapers and title page. Duodecimo, 7 1/4" tall, 296 pages + 4 ads, gilt top fore-edge, gilt spine titles on blue cloth. A good, generally clean, neat hard cover first edition with moderate shelf wear, spine cloth frayed at top and bottom edges, minor rubbing at the corners, hinges and binding solid, paper clean, moderately yellowed, with a few marginal foxing stains.

The gilt lettering on the spine is bright, as is the gilt top edge, although the top edge shows some wear as well. There is some light spotting to the margins of the pages, but the text is bright and easily read. The 296 pages and four pages of ads are solidly bound and the gutters are intact. There is an old booksellers stamp, Strickland and Pearson Booksellers and Stationers San Francisco, affixed to the lower right corner of the front paste down. A previous owner's stamped name is in purple at the upper right corner of the rear paste down.

A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Mrs. Gilder, with dear regards of the author, Edith M. Thomas, Jan 16th, 1887," below which she has penned an 18-line poem, starting "Lady of the fair estate." Helena Gilder, the wife of longtime Century Magazine editor Richard Watson Gilder, who published many of Thomas's poems in his magazine, served as an occasional model and was the unrequited love of the painter Winslow Homer; with R. W. Gilder's library bookplate on the front free endpaper. A rare publication with a distinguished provenance. Inscribed by Author(s).

A total of 64 pages in the author's hand within, all poetry including the presentation on the front end paper: "If antic rhymes sort not with plodding prose, with skip and halt this little volume goes. To my dear friend, Mrs Lucy G. Morse, Christmas 1888." We have other books signed by the author and confirm that these lines are hers, but this book is not signed. End papers foxed, smudged, glue darkened. Paper toned. Morse and her husband James Herbert Morse were well recognized and published poets in the 19th century.
