Wear on dust jacket with chips and small edge tears. Binding is tight and square. From the library of Federal Judge Samuel Sibley. 385 pages 23 cm. . . . . . . . . Revolution: Why, How, When? (1943) by Robert Hunter (1874?1942) is a 385-page historical and sociological study of political upheavals, published by Harper & Brothers (with later editions appearing under the Committee for Constitutional Government). Drawing on the author?s earlier career as a prominent Progressive-era social worker, settlement-house resident, and Socialist Party activist?who later became disillusioned with socialism after World War I and turned sharply against the New Deal?the book surveys revolutions across history to analyze their causes, methods, and timing. Hunter, once acquainted with radical and revolutionary figures, uses that insider perspective to dissect the anatomy of revolutionary movements. In the work, Hunter rejects Marxism and the idea of violent or radical revolution as solutions to social problems. He contends that American capitalism had by then largely eliminated mass poverty, rendering revolutionary upheaval unnecessary and highly destructive. The book argues for evolutionary reform, limited government intervention, balanced budgets, and the preservation of constitutional order instead of the chaos, repression, and failed outcomes he associated with revolutions. Written in the late 1930s and promoted vigorously by the author to political leaders, it reflects his conservative turn and concerns about contemporary political trends. …
